How to verify age and accept mDLs

Digital IDs and mDLs are the next generation of identity documents and thus represent a moving target when it comes to ID scanner compatibility. We have a fantastic partner, Credence ID who provides ID scanning hardware fully compatible with VeriScan.

Which scanners can scan mDLs?

Handheld ID scanners, and Windows-compatible scanners such as the Unitech TS200, are capable of scanning digital IDs which expose a 2D barcode (LA Wallet, MyColorado). VeriScan for iOS is capable of scanning IDs in Apple Wallet. VeriScan for Windows with a Credence ID Tap2ID Mobile ID Reader is capable of reading and verifying mDLs from all states.

Can you parse information from an mDL?

mDLs with barcodes general follow the same format as the ID barcode for their state and can be parsed normally.

Apple Wallet, MID, and GetMobileID use a different data sharing protocol which may not allow for the retention of any information.

Are there devices that can authenticate physical drivers licenses and scan mDLs?

Currently we are not aware of any ID scanner that can both authenticate physical IDs and scan mDLs. We are constantly evaluating new ID scanners for this capability.

Mobile ID (MID) by Idemia

Idemia has release mDL applications in 5 states using the MID app. They also offer a free verification app for businesses, however this application does not catch fake physical IDs, nor can it read Apple Wallet IDs, limiting its usefulness in scenarios in which businesses may need to accept multiple document types.

Mobile drivers license & digital ID FAQ

Which states offer mobile drivers licenses?

As of August 2024, the following states have active mDLs:

Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio and Utah, as well as Puerto Rico. Oklahoma and Florida have released mobile IDs but elected to pause and retool their programs.

Where can mobile drivers licenses be used?

The TSA accepts these IDs at select airports. Wider rollout and adoption is expected in the near future with use cases for age verification, hotel check-in, car rental, banking, and more. Two states allow for mobile IDs to be used for voting.

How many people are using digital IDs in states that offer them?

Louisiana was the first state to launch a digital ID in 2018 with LA Wallet. As of 2023, 66% of eligible adults are using the app. So adoption of electronic IDs is strong and growing. California indicates that in the first few months of the program nearly 600,000 Californians installed their mobile ID app.

How do you read a mobile ID?

While every state’s mobile ID works slightly differently, mobile IDs typically require NFC and Bluetooth to create a secure connection for verification of the ID. While some states show the information on the ID visually, the intent is that the ID is electronic and reading/verifying the mobile ID or mDL also happens electronically.

Does the US offer a digital passport?

Google recently announced support for a digital passport in Google Wallet. Google Wallet uses an IDV process to read the passport RFID card and then issues a credential called an “ID pass” which can be used at some TSAs for domestic travel. You can learn more at this blog.

Which states have announced plans for a mobile drivers license?

As of August 2024, the following states have announced plans to launch a mobile drivers license:

Alaska, Connecticut, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia as well as Washington D.C.

What security features are on digital IDs?

mDLs require biometric access such as a fingerprint or face ID to access the credential. This, combined with verification from the issuing authority when the ID is added to the application or wallet, make them extraordinarily secure.

Do other countries have mobile IDs?

All Australian states and virtually every European country have also launched mobile ID programs and are in various states of readiness.
