Mobile ID rollout and adoption in Alaska
The Alaska mobile ID is offered through the MiD app, available in both Apple Store and Google Play. Alaska is the 9th state to launch and support their own state based app. It is a free companion solution that locals can download in addition to their physical ID.
While they don’t currently have integrations with Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet, the standalone app is being well received by locals. As such, it is expected the state will integrate with various smart wallets sometime in the future.
Where can the Alaska digital ID be used?
The Alaska mobile ID is expected to be accepted at participating TSAs around the country mid to late 2025.
Alaska retailers are NOT required to accept the new digital ID format. However, they are encouraged to do so.
At this time, law enforcement does not accept the Alaska mDL (mobile drivers license). Residents should continue to carry their physical ID until the acceptance of mDLs becomes more commonplace in Alaska.
How can businesses read/verify Alaska mobile IDs?
In order to read/verify Alaska digital IDs, businesses and government entities will need to use a compatible app and/or scanner that is capable of reading the encrypted data.
VeriScan for Windows with a Tap2ID mobile ID reader is capable of reading and verifying mDLs, including the Alaska digital ID, and storing information alongside data from scanned physical IDs and passports.
