Status of mobile drivers license in New Jersey

Status: Under consideration

The Transportation Committee in the New Jersey State Senate voted unanimously to approve a bill that would require New Jersey courts and law enforcement to accept an approved New Jersey mobile ID. The bill does not specify how the mobile ID will be distributed or issued, so it is yet to be announced whether the New Jersey digital ID would use an existing wallet like ID in Apple Wallet, or a proprietary application.

Notable elements of the bill include:

  • Giving the state of New Jersey the right to charge for the digital credential
  • Motorcycle licenses, probationary licenses will be included (no word on CDLs)
  • Judges and police officers must accept the New Jersey mobile drivers license
