In the summer of 2018, Louisiana launched LA Wallet, a digital driver’s license app available for iPhones and Androids. Louisiana lawmakers set the digital license in motion through 2016 legislation, so LA Wallet is approved by law for driving while in Louisiana. In most cases, the app replaces the need for Louisiana for a physical ID. Louisiana is the first state in the country to allow for a digital driver’s license or driver’s license app.
Louisiana’s Office of Alcohol and Tobacco (ATC) recently announced that businesses who sell alcohol, tobacco, and other age-restricted items can now accept LA Wallet as a valid form of ID to verify age and identity. Instead of presenting a physical driver’s license or ID, Louisiana residents can now show their LA Wallet app.
