GET Mobile Verify is a mobile solution that allows businesses to inspect and verify an ID for age validation as well as ID authenticity. It is a free app on both the Apple AppStore and the Google Play store.
When tested against the 7 known real IDs, GETMobileVerify passed 7/7.
When tested against the 43 known fake IDs, it caught 1/43 fake IDs. It is important to note the app didn’t actually register the one ID as a fake ID, it just wouldn’t scan any of the data from the barcode (which can lead one to believe the ID is likely fake).
There were two instances where the ID was scanned, but the information on the front didn’t match the information contained in the barcode, leaving it up to employees to catch the difference. One person who was displaying female data on the front, scanned male data from the back barcode. Another person displayed one name on the front, but scanned in as Kiera Knightly (yes, the actress/model) from the barcode.

VeriScan is a software solution and ID scanner app from IDScan.net. Along with being an age verification platform, it also doubles as a visitor management solution. The app is available on both the Apple AppStore and the Google Play store.
When tested against the 7 known real IDs, VeriScan passed 7/7. When tested against the 43 known fake IDs, VeriScan caught an incredible 43/43. Along with informing the user that an ID was real, it included a popup to let the user know if an ID was expired. With the fake IDs, the same expiration warning popped up, but the display message informing users of a potential fake read: Suspicious ID – additional validation recommended.

When we tested the 7 known real IDs, ID Scanner passed 4/7. 3 of the legitimate IDs were flagged as fake. This high rate of false positives will create poor customer service and line jams at entrance.
When tested against the 43 known fake IDs, ID Scanner caught 23/43. 20 known fake IDs passed through the ID Scanner app.
Using the banned and VIP feature is not self explanatory and requires some finesse

ID Scanner Professional
ID Scanner professional is an ID scanner app that is available on both the Apple AppStore and the Google Play Store. It is designed to “verify document information” and acts as a sort of visitor management tool for bars, restaurants, clubs, and cafes.
When we tested the 7 known real IDs, ID Scanner Professional passed 6/7, but for 3/6 that it passed, the app stated it “couldn’t read part of the data”.
When we tested against the 43 known fake IDs, ID Scanner Professional caught 12/43. The same pop-up, stating that it “couldn’t read part of the data” happened again when testing the fake IDs. Across all IDs, it had trouble reading part of the data.

When we tested the 7 known real IDs, Scandit passed 4/7.
When we tested against the 43 known fake IDs, Scandit caught 24/43. Of the 24, on 1/24 explicitly said “Failed Barcode Verification”, the others simply would not scan.

When we tested the 7 known real IDs, Scanner passed 7/7.
When we tested the 43 known fake IDs, Scannr caught 2/43. The only two that were not scanned as valid, were only marked as such because the IDs would not scan at all on the app. Even with “bouncer mode” turned on, no fake IDs were flagged meaning it likely only checked to make sure the age met the necessary requirements.

When we tested the 7 known real IDs, Vemos – ID Scan passed 6/7. The one real ID that was not passed was not done so because there was an error verifying the ID.
When we tested the 43 known fake IDs, Vemos – ID Scan caught 9/43. Of the IDs that were known fakes, all of the IDs that were not flagged as possible fake IDs or had errors verifying were passed as over 21, leaving it up to the user to allow entry, deny entry, or ban.

State IDs come in all different varieties since the design on the front of the ID is open to artistic expression by each state, so how do you know if it is real or fake? While the front of the ID is generally customized to include state specific design features like the state bird or state flower, it is important to have standardized, built in security features to help businesses differentiate between real and fake IDs. Most states try to follow the guidelines from either the ICAO or AAMVA for where specific security features should be placed on the respective state ID. Here are some of the most common security features on state IDs.
Holograms
Holograms are one of the most common security features seen on all state IDs. The designs are often unique to the state, but can easily help business owners due to their unique three-dimensional effects that can easily be seen without using any special technology. This is because the light is refracted off the nano-structures, creating an easy to see design.
While these holographic security features can be seen with a naked eye, for authentication purposes, businesses would benefit from employing the use of an M500, or similar product. The M500 runs a series of light checks, including UV, IR, and white light checks. These light checks are run against VeriScan’s known database of security features, and are compared at microscopic level to ensure the features match, thus authenticating the ID.
Microprinting
Microprinting is another common security feature on all state IDs. This security feature is created by using a microscopic pattern on the ID that is not easily reproduced by fake ID manufacturers. Differing from holograms, microprint usually requires some type of magnifier to be able to see, hence the name microprint.
UV ink
Ultra-violet (UV) ink is a security feature that is created by covertly hiding images and/or text on the state ID by using a specialized form of printing. These images often cannot be seen unless they’re viewed under a UV light. This security feature is similar to a hologram, but where the hologram will refract light to a naked eye, the UV ink will only react once it is placed under the UV light, adding an additional level of security that is difficult for fake ID creators to replicate properly.

2D Barcode security

How to catch fake IDs
Having worked in the identity verification technology space for nearly a decade, I have seen firsthand the rapidly growing sophistication of fakes. They look nothing like the McLovin ID from the movie Superbad with obviously fake details and a grainy photo. In many cases they are indistinguishable from a valid ID to the naked eye. As many as 40-50% of fake IDs now scan, which means that their barcode is formatted to be read by an ID scanner. And most attempt at least a rudimentary hologram or watermark.
ID authentication – a process in which the ID is examined in infrared and ultraviolet light, checked against algorithmic format templates, and has its barcode reviewed for known flaws, is the only way to catch 95% of fakes. Although Paul Murdaugh was using a false ID, that would have passed even ID authentication (because it was his brother’s legitimate ID), the mere presence of an ID scanner would have likely been a major detergent and it would have demonstrated to Paul Murdaugh that Parker’s Kitchen was taking age verification seriously. Additionally, an ID scanner would have done the hard part of verifying the ID’s legitimacy, leaving the retail attendant to simply match Murdaugh’s face to the face on the ID.

We monitored ID scans across our entire customer base for one month, amounting to more than 8,000,000 scanned IDs. The results, published in the inaugural IDScan.net Fake ID Report were shocking.
Although across all industries, roughly 0.52% of IDs were flagged as suspicious, amongst dispensaries, that number climbed to between 2% and 5%.
Broadly, studies have shown that dispensaries largely perform some type of age verification, there is no standard for exactly what the age verification process must entail. Only three states require ID scanning, so for the rest of the cannabis retail market, visual inspection of ID meets regulatory thresholds. But is it enough when as many as 1 in 20 customers at busy cannabis retailers could be using fraudulent identification?
Why age verification matters for dispensaries
Fines and penalties for failing to properly verify age are simply much more expensive and devastating for cannabis businesses than for other types of age-restricted businesses such as casinos or bars. Because cannabis remains federally illegal, and because of cultural perceptions around cannabis consumption, regulatory bodies and state legislatures have created a much more punitive regulatory environment which provides little room for retailer error when it comes to age verification.

If each dispensary is serving just 100 customers every 24 hours, that represents between 2 and 5 potential sales to customers who are using false identification to complete their purchase each day. With dispensaries operating on increasingly thin profit margins, the fines from a single underage sale can be crippling. 2nd and 3rd offenses are even more expensive and often come with license suspensions or revocations. Age verification and avoidance of penalties is critical.
How do dispensaries perform age verification?
In more than 20 states, visual inspection of an ID meets regulatory standards for age verification. This means that in order to be considered compliant, a bouncer, security personnel, or budtender simply needs to visually check the ID. However, with the growing sophistication of fake IDs, most fake IDs currently in circulation cannot be detected visually. These IDs look and feel exactly like legitimate identity documents. The only way the majority of fake IDs can be detected is by using a combination of white/ultraviolet/infrared light scanning, and checking the ID against hologram, watermark, and document format libraries. This process is known as ID authentication.
4 states: Nevada, Illinois, New Jersey, and Missouri require ID scanning using an electronic ID scanner as part of their age verification workflow, with additional states such as Oregon, Virginia, and Massachusetts having language in-process. However, only one (Nevada) outlines a standard that could be considered ID authentication. The others speak to “digital ID scanning” which is a poorly defined term that can include basic ID parsing, which does nothing to actually catch fake IDs and simply reads the data stored inside the 2D barcode on the back of the ID.
Undercover studies of dispensaries confirm that while 95% are performing age verification, there is no nationwide standard for how age verification is performed. Based on our familiarity with high-quality fake IDs, we know that visual document inspection, or ID parsing with a low-quality scanning product, is not catching the vast majority of fakes. This means that age verification is not matching the true intent of regulatory frameworks, and is leaving wide compliance gaps that expose dispensaries to potential fines for selling to minors.
How dispensaries can avoid fines associated with sales to minors

Key data related to fake ID usage: – In a given month or week, 0.52% of IDs presented for inspection, across all industry verticals, are fraudulent, equating to roughly 1 in 200 customers. – Between 2-5% of IDs presented at dispensaries show indications of being fraudulent. – 69% of college students have owned or used a fake ID. Students who participate in Greek life on campus are substantially over-represented in this number. – While hair color and eye color are typically correct, 36% of fake IDs do not match the state of the individual’s legitimate ID. – More than 50% of fake IDs have barcode anomalies which can be caught using 2D barcode security.
The 17-page report also details some of 2022’s most famous civil and criminal cases related to fake ID usage, including the shutdown of a Baton Rouge bar after the death of 19-year-old LSU student Madison Brooks who was drinking using a fake ID.

French conglomerate and identity technology giant Thales has joined forces with IDScan.net to develop products aimed at tackling fraud and offenses using fake ID, particularly concerning underage drinking in the U.S.
The partnership was unveiled by New Orleans-based IDScan.net, which says it will bring together Thales’s identity document scanners and its own VeriScan Authentication software to check IDs against hologram and watermark libraries.
At the time of writing, the firms have collaborated on two separate ID scanners based on the Thales CR5400 and AT10K models. The devices come with VeriScan already integrated and support ID verification features, as well as ID information parsing into a visitor management system to help security teams manage ban lists and prevent chargebacks.
From a hardware standpoint, the CR5400 and AT10K devices can perform UV/IR/white light scanning, as well as rapid six-image capture to ensure scanned IDs can be read correctly by VeriScan.
According to the firms, the age verification scanners aim to fill a technical gap created by the lack of identification technologies for fake ID, particularly in the light of many fake IDs being sophisticated and typically passing a visual inspection and barcode scan checks.
“Most bars and nightclubs think any scanning of an ID is catching fakes, but the reality is most ID scanning apps are just verifying age; they don’t catch any fake IDs at all,” comments IDScan.net CEO Terry Slattery. “Even companies with more sophisticated tech simply can’t do it without specialty hardware.”

HOUSTON, Texas — A woman used a fake ID to steal a $14,000 car from a small Texas dealership. She went on a test drive and did not return.
“She said I’ll go for 10 minutes to test drive, but one hour, two hours, she never showed up, she never came back,” Ahmad Hallal, the owner, said.
The woman first came to the car lot two weeks ago, test-drove a Chevrolet Impala, and said she would return once her tax return came in, Hallal said.
One week later, she came back to the southwest Houston shop for the 2014 Impala.
“She said, ‘I like this car. Can I test drive it?'” I told her, “OK, and I took the driver’s license and a phone number,” he said.
After 20 to 30 minutes, Hallal said he knew that the lady and the car were not coming back, he tells ABC13.
He called the number she left but didn’t get an answer, so he called the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, who came out to his lot and discovered something.
As Hallal showed the Louisiana ID the woman had left behind, deputies realized that it was fake.
“I feel bad. It’s not a cheap car. Now we’ve lost $14,000,” Hallal said.
The car dealership owner said he keeps his fingers crossed that the woman will be caught and the car returned.
