As states become more stringent with their ID scanning laws, businesses are always looking for a solution they can trust to ensure their compliance, but also a solution that is easy and readily available – Insert fake ID scanner apps. ID scanner apps are easily accessible for staff to download from their respective app stores onto their phones as a mobile solution that can be transported wherever they need in order to verify age. With such a wide selection of fake ID scanner apps on the market, we decided to test 7 of the top results on the app store against known fake and real IDs to compare results and give you information to make your decision easier.
Test parameters
We tested known IDs against 7 different ID scanner apps. We tested 7 real IDs, which have been authenticated as real. We also tested 43 known fake IDs against the same apps for a total of 50 test scans.
Apps tested

VeriScan

Results
GET MobileVerify
GET Mobile Verify is a mobile solution that allows businesses to inspect and verify an ID for age validation as well as ID authenticity. It is a free app on both the Apple AppStore and the Google Play store.
When tested against the 7 known real IDs, GETMobileVerify passed 7/7.
When tested against the 43 known fake IDs, it caught 1/43 fake IDs. It is important to note the app didn’t actually register the one ID as a fake ID, it just wouldn’t scan any of the data from the barcode (which can lead one to believe the ID is likely fake).
There were two instances where the ID was scanned, but the information on the front didn’t match the information contained in the barcode, leaving it up to employees to catch the difference. One person who was displaying female data on the front, scanned male data from the back barcode. Another person displayed one name on the front, but scanned in as Kiera Knightly (yes, the actress/model) from the barcode.
Pros:
Easy user interface
Free solution
Cons:
Only verifies whether someone is 18 or 21 and older
Doesn’t catch fake IDs
It has other options to select for filters you want to add, but none are ones to determine whether the ID is fake. It just filters what data you want to pull from the ID.
VeriScan
VeriScan is a software solution and ID scanner app from IDScan.net. Along with being an age verification platform, it also doubles as a visitor management solution. The app is available on both the Apple AppStore and the Google Play store.
When tested against the 7 known real IDs, VeriScan passed 7/7. When tested against the 43 known fake IDs, VeriScan caught an incredible 43/43. Along with informing the user that an ID was real, it included a popup to let the user know if an ID was expired. With the fake IDs, the same expiration warning popped up, but the display message informing users of a potential fake read: Suspicious ID – additional validation recommended.
Pros:
Easy user interface
Specific groups to put patrons into
Consistent results
Pop-ups are helpful
Free one month trial
Detailed scan history
Cons:
When you use the camera to scan, it is super zoomed in, so you have to pull back a good bit to scan
Paid solution after the first month
ID Scanner
ID Scanner is an ID scanner app that is available on both the Apple App store and the Google Play store. The app is designed to scan IDs to catch if they are valid, expired, and more.
When we tested the 7 known real IDs, ID Scanner passed 4/7. 3 of the legitimate IDs were flagged as fake. This high rate of false positives will create poor customer service and line jams at entrance.
When tested against the 43 known fake IDs, ID Scanner caught 23/43. 20 known fake IDs passed through the ID Scanner app.
Using the banned and VIP feature is not self explanatory and requires some finesse
No detailed history other than the name, age, and scan date/time
ID Scanner Professional
ID Scanner professional is an ID scanner app that is available on both the Apple AppStore and the Google Play Store. It is designed to “verify document information” and acts as a sort of visitor management tool for bars, restaurants, clubs, and cafes.
When we tested the 7 known real IDs, ID Scanner Professional passed 6/7, but for 3/6 that it passed, the app stated it “couldn’t read part of the data”.
When we tested against the 43 known fake IDs, ID Scanner Professional caught 12/43. The same pop-up, stating that it “couldn’t read part of the data” happened again when testing the fake IDs. Across all IDs, it had trouble reading part of the data.
Pros:
The app has a detailed history
Cons:
After the initial test scans, the app becomes a paid solution
The scanner is inconsistent. Sometimes it scans the barcode on the ID, but sometimes it will only take a picture and analyze the picture
Same results, about inability to read data, for both fake and legitimate IDs create a confusing experience for the user
The VIP and Banned functions were not immediately obvious
Scandit
Scandit is a data capture platform designed to scan a variety of different barcode types and verify an ID. The app is available on both the Apple AppStore and the Google Play Store.
When we tested the 7 known real IDs, Scandit passed 4/7.
When we tested against the 43 known fake IDs, Scandit caught 24/43. Of the 24, on 1/24 explicitly said “Failed Barcode Verification”, the others simply would not scan.
Pros:
The app is free
The app can read a variety of barcode types
Cons:
The user interface is clunky and very busy
No scan history
Camera inconsistently scans
Some fake IDs simply do not scan, which can lead to user confusion as to whether the app is working, rather than a clear pop-up with scan results
Scannr
Scannr is an app designed to track patrons and detect underage patrons using “bouncer mode”. The app is available on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
When we tested the 7 known real IDs, Scanner passed 7/7.
When we tested the 43 known fake IDs, Scannr caught 2/43. The only two that were not scanned as valid, were only marked as such because the IDs would not scan at all on the app. Even with “bouncer mode” turned on, no fake IDs were flagged meaning it likely only checked to make sure the age met the necessary requirements.
Pros:
The scanner scans quickly
Modern user interface
No false positives
Cons:
Did not catch any fakes
Only shows basic demographic information
No detailed history
After the initial test scans, the app becomes a paid solution
Vemos – ID Scan
Vemos – ID Scan is a platform designed to allow easy age verification as well as a basic visitor management system. The app is available on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
When we tested the 7 known real IDs, Vemos – ID Scan passed 6/7. The one real ID that was not passed was not done so because there was an error verifying the ID.
When we tested the 43 known fake IDs, Vemos – ID Scan caught 9/43. Of the IDs that were known fakes, all of the IDs that were not flagged as possible fake IDs or had errors verifying were passed as over 21, leaving it up to the user to allow entry, deny entry, or ban.
Pros:
The app is free
The camera scans relatively easily
Cons:
The user interface is not very self explanatory
The history only includes scans from the same day
In the accessible history, there is only basic information like name and age
Summary of findings
Of the 7 ID scanner apps tested, one stood out from the competition, with a close second and third place, while apps four through seven showed dismal results. In order of best to worst when catching fake IDs while also accepting real IDs, the results are as follows:
VeriScan: 7/7 Real IDs passed | 43/43 Fake IDs caught
ID Scanner: 4/7 Real IDs passed | 23/43 Fake IDs caught
ID Scanner Professional: 6/7 Real IDs passed | 12/43 Fake IDs caught
Vemos – ID Scan: 6/7 Real IDs passed | 9/43 Fake IDs caught
Scannr: 7/7 Real IDs passed | 2/43 Fake IDs caught
GET Mobile Verified: 7/7 Real IDs passed | 1/43 Fake IDs caught
These findings, especially for the lower performing ID scanner apps are concerning because businesses are downloading these solutions in an attempt to protect themselves against compliance checks, underage patrons, and potential lawsuits related to serving minors. Having a solution that claims to verify both age and validity of an ID, while not doing, that can seriously harm a business.
The results of the research are clear, VeriScan outperformed the competition. For the most accurate results when scanning IDs at your business, download the VeriScan app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and try the ID scanner app for yourself.

What if your visitor management system could alert you the moment a potential VIP arrived at your door? Bars, nightclubs, casinos, and other establishments often purchase lists, perform targeted advertising, or work with hotel concierges to try and understand who might be a big spender and attract them to their venue.
With VeriScan Gold Zip Codes, your ID scanning system can become another tool in your arsenal to better track VIPs and potential VIPs, by alerting you when an individual who lives in a wealthy area has their ID scanned.
What is a Gold Zip Code?
A Gold Zip code is a top 500 zip code, where the average income is among the highest in the country. These are areas such as Beverly Hills, Miami Beach, and Atherton, California.
Having an address in one of these zip codes doesn’t necessarily mean that the individual is wealthy or looking to perform high roller activities, but it can provide a confidence interval that the person has much more disposable income than average.
How can your bar, nightclub, or casino use Gold Zip Codes?
While income shouldn’t change the customer service you provide to your patrons, knowing the customer is likely to have increased disposable income can provide the opportunity for upsells, higher tips, and higher spending. So this feature can provide a lucrative opportunity for businesses when utilized properly.
VeriScan customers who are using Gold Zip Codes typically train their team, so that their employees can activate on the new potential high roller. This might include a complimentary beverage, an assigned host or hostess to tend to their needs, or ensuring they are serviced by your most seasoned staff members.
How to Access the Gold Zip Code Feature
The Gold Zip code feature is not tier specific, and can be accessed using any tier of the VeriScan software. Each operating system is slightly different when it comes to getting the feature set up, and the instructions for each are explained below.
Step 2. On the left hand menu, drop down the settings option and the toggle to local settings
Step 3. Once the feature is enabled on your account, under the alerts tab, make sure the button for Gold Zip Codes is turned on (blue)
Step 5. On the device, tap on the hamburger menu icon (three lines), then on Settings
Step 6. Under Warning Pop-ups, ensure the Gold Zip Code Warning is toggled on (blue)
Step 7. You’re ready to begin using the feature
*Note: This version does not have a pop-up that displays after a Gold Zip Code scan, but it will display the words “Gold Zip Code” under the patron’s group assignment
Step 2. On the left hand menu, drop down the settings option and the toggle to local settings
Step 3. Once the feature is enabled on your account, under the alerts tab, make sure the button for Gold Zip Codes is turned on (blue)
4. You’re ready to begin using the feature
Tagging & managing your VIPs
VeriScan allows you to tag your VIPs or loyal customers. You can use the Gold Zip Codes feature to flag potential VIPs, and then add them to your established list. Every time the VIP arrives on site your team will know immediately and can provide the highest tier of service.
You can also run reports on your VIP list to look for patterns in the zip codes where your highest value customers come from. Then set up alerts that will create your own Gold Zip Code flags.
Conclusion
When searching for an ID Scanning and visitor management solution, it’s clear that there are a lot of options on the market. So extra features can set one company apart from another. Historic Swiss casino The Grand Casino Luzern, built in 1882, has replaced manual ID checks for its online offering by partnering with ID verification provider Regula.
The casino had traditionally had the ID cards checked manually by its staff, but found the process “extremely time-consuming and prone to human error.”
The Regula Document Reader SDK automates ID document reading and verification. The software identifies identity document type, finds the data fields, and checks that they are relevant and contain valid information for the particular type of ID in question, aiming to stamp out identity fraud.
Using fake ID at a casino, online or in-person, isn’t exactly a rare occurrence either, at least according to new research on the topic of fake ID’s released by IDScan.
According to the research, 0.1% to 0.4% of the IDs scanned at U.S.-based casinos showed signs of being fake.
However, this is significantly less than the number of young people using fake IDs to get into nightclubs, which stands at between 0.7% and 2%, and the proportion using fake IDs for cannabis dispensaries, which rises to between 2% to 5%.
The research also touched on where the average fake ID is most likely to fall short.
As per IDScan’s findings, weight is the physical attribute where fake IDs are most likely to not match their subject, doing so in 40% of cases.
State is the second most likely attribute to be wrong, failing to match in 36% of cases, followed by height and eye color, which are wrong 31% and 22% of the time respectively.
Despite these imperfections, fake ID use shows no particular signs of slowing down according to the firm’s research.
The report found around 14,000 fake IDs were seized in 2020, with 97% of these being imports from either China or Hong Kong.
The day has finally arrived. We are happy to unveil an exclusive look at our age restricted vending machine in action at the 2023 NAMA Show. We attended alongside our partners from FastCorp and Thru Solutions who all played parts in producing the all purpose machine shown below.
See the Age Restricted Vending Machine in Action!
See our partner validating his identity. The ID is inserted into the embedded M500, set through a series of light checks, and validated. He is then sent through guided prompts on face matching and anti spoofing. The whole process incredibly easy and takes less than 15 seconds!
How Does it Work?
As you can see from the video above, the process is self guided, quick, and easy, but here is a breakdown of how the age verification process actually works.
This process starts with a customer inserting their ID into the designated area after selecting the product they want to purchase. Inside that slot is a built-in ID Scanner that scans the ID using white light, UV light, and infrared light to authenticate the legitimacy of the ID. After the ID has been authenticated, the age restricted vending machine then guides users through the Biometric section of the process. As you saw, the customer was asked to follow a series of commands in order to assure matching to the ID while ensuring liveness and anti-spoofing of the customer to prevent fraud.
But won’t all of these machines take away from the curb appeal? No. All of these built in security features and integrations are seamlessly hidden inside the machine, so that the outside remains sleek and branded to your specifications.
Use Cases
The best part of the age restricted vending machine is the efficiency of it. As you can see in the video, the entire process only took about 30 seconds. The longest part is deciding which product you want to purchase from the age restricted vending machine.
The machine is fully customizable and can house a variety of products in different shapes and sizes. You aren’t limited to soda size cans, or chip size bags. Custom molds are created so that you can put whatever age restricted product inside that you desire, including alcohol, tobacco, cigarettes, or even all three at the same time. The possibilities and combinations are endless due to the built in security features mentioned above. This makes it the perfect solution for busy bars who need to free up bartenders for cocktail only orders, and for smoke shops and dispensaries who want a quick and efficient checkout method for those customers that know what they want. For certain states you could even place these machines in shopping malls or on busy streets depending on state regulations for age restricted products.

Biometrics refer to the use of physical or behavioral characteristics to identify individuals. In the context of identity verification, biometric authentication systems use unique biological or behavioral features of a person to verify their identity.
Biometric features may include facial recognition, fingerprints, iris or retina scans, voice recognition, hand geometry, or even behavioral traits such as typing patterns or walking gait. These features are captured by sensors and then compared with the pre-existing biometric data stored in a database to confirm or deny the identity of the person.
Biometric authentication systems are becoming increasingly popular in areas such as banking, security, and mobile devices. They are considered to be more secure than traditional methods of identification, such as passwords or personal identification numbers (PINs), as biometric features are much harder to forge or steal.
Facial Recognition
This technology uses cameras to capture an image of a person’s face, which is then compared to a database of stored images to verify their identity. The system analyzes key facial features, such as the shape of the face, distances between eyes, nose, and mouth, and unique landmarks. It extracts numerical representations (face templates or face embeddings) that capture these distinctive features. The extracted face templates or embeddings are compared against a database of known faces or enrolled templates. This comparison is typically done using mathematical algorithms that calculate the similarity between the templates.
Strengths of Facial Recognition for Biometric Identity Verification
Facial recognition is non-invasive and relatively inexpensive due to its maturity in the market.
It works quickly accurately.
It can be used in real-time and in one-to-many scenarios, or as face matching in one-to-one scenarios
Weaknesses of Facial Recognition for Biometric Identity Verification
Facial recognition is commonly cited as a privacy concern due to its ability to be used without consumer knowledge using mounted cameras.
It can also be impacted by lighting, changes in appearance (glasses, facial hair, etc.)
It’s important to note that there are different approaches to facial recognition, such as 2D-based methods that analyze images or videos, and 3D-based methods that use depth information to create a more accurate representation of the face.
Fingerprint Recognition
Fingerprint recognition, also known as fingerprint biometrics, is a technology that identifies and verifies individuals based on their unique patterns of ridges and valleys on their fingertips. The first automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) was introduced in the 1960s. It utilized early computer technology to digitize and store fingerprint data for efficient matching and retrieval. These early AFIS systems were primarily used by law enforcement agencies to aid in criminal investigations.

Fingerprints can be difficult to capture in certain conditions (wet, dirty fingers)
Requires physical access to the individual and cannot reliably be used in remote identity verification scenarios
Fingerprint recognition systems can use various algorithms, such as ridge-based matching, correlation-based matching, or minutiae-based matching. Machine learning techniques, such as neural networks, can be employed to train the algorithms and improve the accuracy of fingerprint recognition. Fingerprint biometrics has gained widespread adoption and acceptance across various industries, including law enforcement, access control, financial institutions, and mobile devices. It has proven to be a reliable and efficient method of identification due to the uniqueness and permanence of fingerprints.
Iris Recognition
Iris recognition is a biometric technology that identifies individuals based on the unique patterns of their iris, which is the colored part of the eye surrounding the pupil. An iris recognition system captures a high-resolution image of the individual’s iris using specialized cameras or sensors. The person is usually required to position their eye within a designated area for accurate image acquisition. The iris region is identified and isolated from the rest of the eye image through a process called iris localization and segmentation. Algorithms are used to detect the boundaries of the iris and exclude irrelevant information, such as eyelids and eyelashes.
Key features are extracted from the iris image to create a unique template or code. These features typically include characteristics such as the arrangement of crypts (furrows), ridges, and other intricate patterns present in the iris. Various algorithms, such as phase-based encoding or Gabor filters, are employed for feature extraction.
This unique pattern is then compared to a database of stored iris images to verify their identity.
Strengths of Iris Recognition for Biometric Identity Verification
Iris patterns are highly distinctive and do not change over time, making iris recognition extremely accurate as a biometric identifier.
Iris recognition works well even in low light environments.
Weaknesses of Iris Recognition for Biometric Identity Verification
Iris recognition requires cameras near the eye and direct eye contact with an individual and thus does not work in one-to-many matching scenarios
Requires physical access to the individual and cannot reliably be used in remote identity verification scenarios
Can be expensive to implement due to novel technology and specialized hardware
Privacy and security measures are critical when implementing iris recognition systems. Iris data is typically stored in encrypted form, and strict protocols are followed to ensure the protection and proper handling of individuals’ biometric information.
Iris recognition has found applications in various fields, including access control, border security, forensic investigations, and identity management.
Voice Recognition
This technology uses software to analyze a person’s voice patterns, which are then compared to a database of stored voice patterns to verify their identity. Voice recognition technology captures and analyzes various vocal characteristics to create a unique voiceprint for each individual. These vocal characteristics include factors such as pitch, tone, cadence, accent, pronunciation, and even physical characteristics of the vocal tract. The voiceprint is created by extracting and storing specific features and patterns from an individual’s voice.
Strengths of Voice Recognition for Biometric Identity Verification
Non-invasive and can be used remotely.
It can be used for both verification and identification.
Weaknesses of Voice Recognition for Biometric Identity Verification
Accuracy can be impacted by background noise or changes in the person’s voice.

Synthetic identity fraud is a type of fraud where criminals create a new identity by combining real and fake information to open new accounts, obtain loans, or engage in other fraudulent activities. Here are some of the most shocking statistics related to synthetic identity fraud:
According to a study by the Federal Reserve, this type of identity fraud is the fastest-growing type of financial crime in the United States. It accounted for $6 billion in losses in 2016 and is projected to reach $8 billion by 2020.
A more recent study done by Javelin Strategy & Research found that an astonishing $43 billion was lost in 2022 due to identity fraud. Which was an improvement from the year before which had $52 billion in losses.
A report by the Aite Group estimated that this type of identity fraud accounts for up to 20% of credit losses and up to 85% of all credit card fraud losses.
The same report also estimated that synthetic identity fraud affects up to 5% of all new account openings and up to 20% of credit applicants.
The average loss per synthetic identity fraud incident is much higher than for other types of fraud. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, the average loss per incident for this identity fraud was $15,000 in 2019, compared to $1,050 for credit card fraud and $4,400 for all types of identity theft.
This type of identity fraud is often not detected until months or even years after the fraudsters have started using the synthetic identity. This is because the fraudsters build up the synthetic identity’s creditworthiness over time by making small purchases and paying them off on time.
These stats highlight the severity of synthetic identity fraud and the urgent need for businesses and individuals to take proactive measures to protect themselves against it.
Where does the majority of synthetic identity fraud come from
The sources of synthetic identity fraud are diverse and can come from different channels. However, there are a few common sources that are often associated with synthetic identity fraud.
The Dark Web: The Dark Web is a hidden part of the internet where illegal activities take place, including the buying and selling of personal information. Fraudsters can purchase stolen Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and other personally identifiable information on the Dark Web and use them to create synthetic identities.
Data breaches: Data breaches are another common source of personal information used for synthetic identity fraud. When a company suffers a data breach, the stolen information can be used to create synthetic identities.
Children’s Social Security numbers: Children’s Social Security numbers are often targeted by fraudsters because they have clean credit histories and are unlikely to be monitored for fraudulent activity. Fraudsters can use a child’s Social Security number and combine it with fake information to create a synthetic identity.
Synthetic identities from other sources: Fraudsters can also create synthetic identities from scratch using a combination of real and fake information.
Overall, synthetic identity fraud can come from multiple sources, and fraudsters are continually finding new ways to obtain personal information. Businesses need to stay vigilant and adopt effective fraud prevention measures to protect against this growing threat.
Antiquated techniques for protecting against synthetic identity fraud
Some of the old techniques businesses would protect against this identity fraud include:
Verifying identities in person: Businesses would verify the identity of customers by checking government-issued IDs, such as driver’s licenses, passports, or national identification cards. This would help ensure that the person applying for credit or opening an account is who they claim to be.
Checking credit history: Businesses would check the credit history of applicants to verify their creditworthiness and identify any inconsistencies or red flags in their credit history.
Manual underwriting: Businesses would manually review and underwrite credit applications instead of relying solely on automated systems. This would allow underwriters to detect any suspicious activity or inconsistencies in the application.
Cross-checking information: Businesses would cross-check the information provided by applicants against other databases and records to ensure that the information is accurate and consistent.
Conducting in-person interviews: Businesses would conduct in-person interviews with applicants to verify their identity and assess their creditworthiness.
While some of these methods are still used today, they have limitations and may not all be effective in detecting synthetic identity fraud. Fraudsters can use a combination of real and fake information to create a synthetic identity that may pass traditional identity verification methods. Therefore, businesses are increasingly turning to new and innovative approaches, such as artificial intelligence to detect and prevent this type of identity fraud.
Modern methods to protect against synthetic identity fraud
Artificial Intelligence (AI): This technology is used to analyze vast amounts of data and detect patterns that may indicate synthetic identity fraud. By AI algorithms, businesses can quickly and accurately detect suspicious activity and prevent fraud.
Behavioral analytics: Behavioral analytics involves analyzing user behavior to detect anomalies and unusual patterns of activity. This approach can help detect this type of identity fraud, as fraudsters often exhibit different behavioral patterns than legitimate users.
Biometric authentication: Biometric authentication uses unique physical or behavioral characteristics, such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or voice recognition, to verify a user’s identity. This method is difficult to replicate and can prevent this identity fraud.
Device fingerprinting: Device fingerprinting involves analyzing the characteristics of the device used to access an application or service, such as the device’s IP address, location, or browser settings. By analyzing this data, businesses can detect whether a user is using a synthetic identity.
Third Party Checks: One of the older methods of protection still useful today is Third Party Checks. These checks run collected data against known databases such as the DMV, sex offender registry, Identifraud and more. Collaboration with these third party businesses involves sharing data and insights across businesses and industries to identify and prevent this identity fraud. By working together, businesses can identify patterns and trends in this identity fraud and develop more effective prevention strategies.
These cutting edge methods leverage advanced technology and analytics to detect and prevent synthetic identity fraud in real-time. As synthetic identity fraud continues to evolve, businesses will need to stay ahead of the curve and adopt new approaches to protect against this growing threat. HOUSTON, Texas — A woman used a fake ID to steal a $14,000 car from a small Texas dealership. She went on a test drive and did not return.
“She said I’ll go for 10 minutes to test drive, but one hour, two hours, she never showed up, she never came back,” Ahmad Hallal, the owner, said.
The woman first came to the car lot two weeks ago, test-drove a Chevrolet Impala, and said she would return once her tax return came in, Hallal said.
One week later, she came back to the southwest Houston shop for the 2014 Impala.
“She said, ‘I like this car. Can I test drive it?'” I told her, “OK, and I took the driver’s license and a phone number,” he said.
After 20 to 30 minutes, Hallal said he knew that the lady and the car were not coming back, he tells ABC13.
He called the number she left but didn’t get an answer, so he called the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, who came out to his lot and discovered something.
As Hallal showed the Louisiana ID the woman had left behind, deputies realized that it was fake.
“I feel bad. It’s not a cheap car. Now we’ve lost $14,000,” Hallal said.
The car dealership owner said he keeps his fingers crossed that the woman will be caught and the car returned.
