Are bars liable if they serve alcohol to a minor?
We have examples in almost every state of bars and individuals who have bee prosecuted or forced to close due to underage sales. It can be disastrous to your bottom line and license to inadvertently sell to a minor, even if the minor was using a fake ID at the time of the purchase.
What percentage of IDs presented at bars are fake?
For most bars, clubs, and other nightlife businesses, roughly 0.5-2% of IDs scanned at the door show signs of being fraudulent (according to our Fake ID Report). This number skyrockets for bars in college towns, or certain locations, and also varies based on the time of year. What we are sure of is: if you are a bar that is not scanning IDs, you are most definitely serving minors without even knowing it.
What are the penalties for serving alcohol to a minor?
Every state is different. You will find penalties in our ID Laws Library. Most states start small, with a fine of $500-$5000 for a first offense, but the penalties get steeper with repeated violations, and often conclude with complete loss of licensure.
Why is checking IDs at the door not enough?
Modern fake IDs are incredibly sophisticated. They cannot be detected with the naked eye, na doften even contain holograms and watermarks to help fool bouncers.
