VeriScan ID scanner app
How does an ID scanner app work?
VeriScan works by decrypting the information stored in the 2D barcode (PDF417) of an ID, or the machine readable zone (MRZ) of a passport. These symbologies contain data such as first name, last name, date of birth, etc. The app verifies ID expiration, age of the ID holder in this way. VeriScan also performs algorithmic checks on the barcode, which allows the app to flag potentially fraudulent IDs.

What are the benefits of using a dedicated handheld ID scanner?

Yes, with VeriScan Premium and above, you can sync multiple devices (both handheld and Windows-based). All scan records are sent to the VeriScan Cloud Portal. You can use the cloud history to review records, add individuals to lists, perform after-the-fact third party checks, and run demographic reports.
Does VeriScan ID scanner app allow for offline scanning?
The VeriScan mobile scanner app can scan offline for up to 14 days. Scans are then synced to the cloud when the device reconnects to the internet.

Can you catch fake IDs with an ID scanner app?

What is included in a "2D barcode security check"?
All the data on the front of an ID is also stored in the barcode. After scanning millions of IDs every month we've found that many fake IDs don't format this data correctly, which allows us to easily flag the ID as fake. This can be as simple as using the wrong state abbreviation, or using too many characters in the ID number. We perform more than 75 algorithmic checks on each ID.
Can you detect expired IDs with an ID scanner app?
Yes, all expired identity documents will be flagged using a pop-up. You can learn more about expired ID scanning here. Your business can then choose whether or not to accept the expired document.
How do you verify age with a mobile ID scanner?
A mobile ID scanner uses the device's camera, or an attached laser, to read the data in the 2D barcode on the back of the ID. It then analyzes the date-of-birth and compares it to today's date. VeriScan software also looks for anomalies in the barcode that may indicate the ID is fake.
What types of IDs can be scanned with a handheld ID scanner?
VeriScan is capable of scanning and reading all North American drivers licenses and state IDs, all global passports, passport cards, military IDs, and some non-US drivers licenses. It can also accept some non-US drivers licenses that contain a PDF 417 on the back of the ID.
VeriScan for iOS is also capable of accepting ID in Apple Wallet and some QR-code based mobile IDs.
IDs which do not contain a PDF417, MRZ, or QR code will require ID authentication for verification.
