Cannabis dispensary ID scanning FAQ
Can you enter a dispensary with a temporary ID?
Dispensaries will likely have their own policy regarding acceptance of a temporary ID or drivers license. At minimum, be prepared to show other items (credit card, health insurance card, etc.) that confirm your identity.
Do dispensaries share information with the government?
No ID data or PII from your scanned ID is shared with the government. The government cannot track your dispensary purchase history based on your ID being scanned.
Do dispensaries keep your ID information?
Each dispensary’s data retention policy will vary based on state and local laws.
Can you enter a dispensary with an expired ID?
The vast majority of dispensaries will not accept an expired ID as when an ID is expired it becomes invalid.
Can you enter a dispensary without an ID, if you don’t plan to purchase cannabis?
Most states require that a valid ID or passport be presented before entering the dispensary premises. If you don’t have ID you will typically not be legally allowed to enter.
Do dispensaries accept mobile IDs?
Mobile ID acceptance is quite early in its lifecycle, so few dispensaries are equipped to verify mobile IDs. However, we anticipate that many dispensaries will invest in this technology as mobile ID adoption becomes more widespread.
