Pennsylvania SB 117 | Amendments to the Liquor Code

Wine being purchased after ID scanning with Pennsylvania SB 117

Pennsylvania is considering a new bill, SB 117, which would require those businesses with a wine expanded permit to employ the use of a transaction scan device prior to any wine sales on all individuals appearing to be under 35. This bill related to expanded wine permits is similar to Pennsylvania SB 688, which recently became law and requires ID scanning for the sale of canned cocktails.

While SB 117 is still relatively early in the legislative process, here is everything we know so far.

What does Pennsylvania SB 117 mean?

SB 117  means all businesses will need to employ the use of an ID scanner with age verification technology on any customer who looks under the age of 35 before completing the sale of wine. The only exception to this rule is when presented with a valid armed forces of the United States identification card. Should this bill pass, it would also have the added benefit of acting as a means of affirmative defense should you accidentally sell wine to a minor.
