It was recently announced that the Florida Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will be making a change to the numbering of Florida driver’s licenses and identification cards issued after July 31, 2024. While the overall design of the driver’s license and identification cards will remain the same, the new format will now require four of the ID numbers to be randomized. This new numbering system is designed to improve security and help better deter ID fraud.
How to get the new Florida ID
Since this only applies to individuals renewing, replacing, or getting an ID for the first time, individuals with an existing ID don’t need to do anything until their current ID expires. For those looking to renew, replace, or get a driver’s license or identification card for the first time, you can do so online at the MyDMV Portal.
Please note: not everyone can renew their license online. Customers must go into a DMV office if any of the following apply:
- Customer used the online convenience service on their last renewal
- Customer is not REAL ID compliant
- Customer wishes to update their photo
- Customer changes their name using an original or certified court order or marriage certificate
- Customer wishes to add or remove a designation or has a court order to update their credential
- Customer is getting a Florida driver license or ID card for the first time
- Customer holds a commercial driver license
- License has the word “TEMPORARY” printed on it
Can IDScan.net still read the new ID format?
Yes. While the ID format is still relatively new, we have not had any issues reading and authenticating the new Florida ID format.
