Update as of November 2025: The new South Carolina ID pilot rollout has begun at two locations, Columbia and Lexington. A full statewide rollout is expected to begin later in 2025.
The South Carolina DMV announced that the rollout of a new driver’s license format, incorporating new security features, starting in fall of 2025. The DMV Executive Director has stated the updated format modernized the way they produce their IDs, while making them more secure and harder to counterfeit. The new cards will no longer be issued same day, thus allowing for a more secure process.
New features on the South Carolina driver’s license
The new South Carolina ID will be made of stronger materials and will incorporate laser engraving as an anti-counterfeit measure. The design will also highlight several South Carolina icons that symbolize the “Palmetto State,” while enhancing security, including:
- The iconic Palmetto Tree
- The State House
- Other state emblems that haven’t been disclosed for security purposes

Along with the enhanced security features on the new South Carolina driver’s license, the new issuing method also makes the ID form more secure and reliable for law enforcement, merchants, retailers, and other businesses that rely on ID authentication. Beginning in fall of 2025, residents will be able to apply for the new ID format; however, those with existing South Carolina IDs may continue using the old driver’s license, as it will remain valid until the expiration date. Given the new distribution method, the South Carolina DMV will notify residents 90 days prior to expiration to ensure adequate time for renewal.
Will ID scanning work on the new South Carolina Driver’s License?
Yes. Both VeriScan and ParseLink will continue to be able to read, parse, and authenticate the new South Carolina ID format, ensuring business continuity without a lapse in service.
