State of digital ID in Illinois
Illinois has begun to explore the idea of having both mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) and digital license plates.
House Bill 4592
Due to the recent adoption of mobile ID use in several other states, the Secretary of State’s office is now looking into implementation. The new law would allow drivers to carry a digital ID on their phone, but would still require a physical ID if requested by law enforcement.
There is not currently a timeline for when the expected research and implementation is set to begin, but we will continue to watch for updates on this new ID format, so stay tuned for more information.
House Bill 4592 has also been introduced. It amends the Illinois Identification Card Act and the Illinois Vehicle Code. Allows the Secretary of State to issue a mobile Illinois Identification Card or mobile driver’s license to an individual who is otherwise eligible to hold a physical credential, in addition to an identification card or driver’s license, if the Secretary of State has issued an identification card or driver’s license to the person.
