As of August 19, 2024, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security began issuing a new driver’s license and ID format for the first time since 2019. The new look is designed with improved security features to help deter ID fraud and fake ID creation. While the new design has begun issuance, Tennesseans with existing IDs will not need to update their drivers license or identification card until their expiration date. Upon renewal, or if applying for a new ID for the first time, all residents will be issued the new ID format.
New Tennessee ID security features

- Polycarbonate cards
- Laser engraved elements
- Windowpane feature with encoded elements
New ID design features
- State Capitol
- State flag
- New color scheme
- New REAL ID symbol – previously a gold star, now represented as a black star
Will ID scanning work on the new Tennessee ID?
Yes. While the ID format is still relatively new, we have not had any issues reading and authenticating the updated ID format. Both VeriScan and ParseLink will be able to read and parse the new ID format thus ensuring business continuity without a lapse in service.
