In May 2024, North Carolina DMV announced that they will be rolling out a new driver’s license format, packed with security features. The DMV Commissioner is calling it their most secure design to date and is the first update to their driver’s license template in nine years. The new cards will be laser engraved and include over 50 security features to detect and prevent fraud.

The front of the new North Carolina driver’s license will include a detailed, fine print behind the entirety of the front of the ID. The ID will also feature iconic imagery from the state. Images include the state flower, the state flag, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and the state salamander.

Additional security features include:

  • Windowpane photo (oval-shaped)
  • Background removal on the ID photo
  • Multiple instances of microprint

Additional security features

In addition to the visual security features present on the new North Carolina driver’s license, the cards also have a thicker texture and heavier feel as they are made of 100% polycarbonate. The North Carolina DMV indicates that legitimate North Carolina IDs issued after June 2024 should produce a metallic “tinking” sound when dropped, providing yet another way to tell these IDs apart from forgeries.

The new ID format will ensure North Carolina driver’s licenses comply with standards set by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). The North Carolina DMV is hoping the changes will make licenses more secure and harder to fraudulently replicate.

Production of the new licenses will begin as old equipment in DMV offices across the state is replaced through the end of June. The state is phasing out its former contract with the current license provider in part because of errors and delays in current production. The old format is expected to be fully retired by the end of June 2024. Licenses issued before the redesign will remain valid until expiration.
