Mobile ID adoption in Texas
Texas currently does not offer a mobile ID through any platform. However, there has been legislation in progress since May 2023 regarding the creation of a Texas digital ID.
Texas HB 71
In May 2023, the Texas House of Representatives passed HB 71, a bill which legalized the use of “digital identification.” This bill initially required the Department of Public Safety create a program for digital driver’s licenses by February 1, 2025. As that date has passed, it is currently unclear when the Texas mobile ID will be available for Texans.
The bill was referred to the Transportation Department on May 4, 2023, but there has not been an update since then.
