State of digital ID in Hawaii

Hawaii announced in 2021 that it planned to begin offering a mobile driver’s license (mDL) to state residents through the Apple Wallet. In addition, House Bill 1686 was also proposed, which would allow the state to create a digital identification program.

The bill was passed in March of 2022, and as of August 28, 2024, the Apple Wallet ID is live, the state based app has not yet been implemented.

Digital ID for Hawaii in Apple Wallet

To get your Hawaii Apple Wallet ID set up, you must first make sure you meet the technical requirements of an iPhone 8 or newer, and an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer. You must also have the latest iOS versions downloaded for both your phone and watch, two-factor authentication must be on, and you must be signed in with your Apple ID with your location set. Your physical ID card should also be clear and easily readable. If you meet the aforementioned requirements, Hawaii residents can add the new Mobile ID by tapping the plus (+) button at the top right corner of the wallet app. From there, scan your Hawaii ID, take a series of photos so that your identity can be verified, then submit your Mobile ID for verification. Once the state approves the ID, it will be added to your Apple Wallet.

Within Hawaii, digital driver’s licenses and state identification cards are currently accepted at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint at the Terminal 1 Makai Checkpoint of the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Apple Stores in the U.S. and in select apps that require identity or age verification. Individuals seeking to use Hawaii-issued REAL IDs in Apple Wallet must continue to carry their physical identification cards. Mobile driver’s licenses cannot be used as proof of name and address to fulfill the lawful order of a police officer.

Using Hawaii Apple Wallet IDs at businesses

Hawaii residents can use their Apple Wallet ID as a means of age verification at participating locations. A variety of apps, such as Tap2iD Mobile and VeriScan, which are now integrated with each other, are acceptable solutions for businesses to download and use to securely accept mobile driver’s licenses and ID cards, including IDs in Apple Wallet, for in-person age verification.
