State of mobile ID in Rhode Island

As of late 2023, Rhode Island remains one of a handful of states that have not announced any movement towards a mobile ID offering. When asked the assistant administrator of the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles stated multiple reasons why the small state has yet to pursue a digital credential:
- Lack of legislation requiring mobile IDs to be accepted. Many states still require that a physical credential still be carried
- Lack of merchant ability to accept mobile IDs
