Louisiana Residents Require Additional ID for Domestic Travel


 

 

 

licenseCongress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 as a response to the 9/11 attacks. Part of the act, requires residents to show proof of citizenship or residency in order to obtain a license. Louisiana is one of the states that does not require this.

As a result of Louisiana’s non compliance to the REAL ID Act, residents of the state will have to show additional identification other than their driver’s license to travel domestically.

 

 

personAccording to the Department of Homeland Security, Louisiana has an extension, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver’s licenses until October 10th, 2016. However, other sources say, Louisiana residents will have to use other forms of identification while travelling starting in January of 2016. Accepted forms of ID will include:

*Military of governmental IDs

* Passport

* Passport Card

* Enhanced Driver’s License

* DHS Trusted Traveler Cards
