Startup Closeup: IDScan.net
In today’s digitized world, businesses are looking to quickly and accurately identify customers for efficient transactions. IDScan.net, an ID verification business, was created to help them.
IDScan.net markets with a mobile solution, and counts IBM, Shell and Tesla as some of the customers using its technology.
Founded in 2003, IDScan.net was established without external capital. Its founders, Russian immigrants Denis Petrov and Andrey Stanovnov, began working out of their homes and later moved to LaunchPad. They enrolled at The Idea Village, and the New Orleans-based tech company is now based in the University of New Orleans Lakefront tech park.
Petrov said what started as a hobby developed into a business.
“We are very proud immigrants that came a very long way and developed a passion for entrepreneurship,” said Petrov, the firm’s CEO. “We are proud to be in the United States and help with the technological growth of this great country.”
IDScan.net captures information from a form of identification. Clients use IDScan.net’s solutions to auto-populate forms, run background checks, track customer activity and manage rewards programs.
Processing the data only takes a couple of seconds and eliminates mistakes and frustrations associated with manual entry, Petrov said. Retailers, auto dealers and rental companies use IDScan.net’s solutions to instantly capture customer information and run credit checks. Places like casinos, theme parks, bars, and college campuses use it to track activity coming and going, to manage customer loyalty programs, pinpoint fake IDs and grant or restrict access. In addition, many businesses use it to generate customer analytics.
IDScan.net was the first to market with the mobile iteration of the technology. In 2009, it delivered the first mobile app approved by Apple that allows a North American driver’s license to be scanned. He said that allowed them to be set apart from similar products.
The company is looking toward the future when physical forms of identification may be replaced with technologies like facial recognition. Petrov said they have created a TSA-approved tool that enables flight crews to electronically verify and validate a passenger’s photo ID prior to boarding a private aircraft.
While they serve major brands, IDScan.net is not able to name many of its customers. They include some of the world’s largest retail chains, automotive dealers and financial institutions, Petrov said.
Petrov said they have various marketing techniques. They use trade shows to promote the technology.
“We continue to innovate that technology,” Petrov said.
Petrov said there are a few publicly traded companies and startups that compete in the same space.
“We identify certain niches that we work in and already have a solid track record that speaks for itself,” he said.
He he wants to continue to create technology that helps businesses by streamlining processes.

Over the course of the last year IDScan.net has worked with the City of Chattanooga to develop a technology that would help them automate dumping at their three refuse disposal sites.
One result was a transaction time that was 20 times faster than the previous one! What used to take a minute to process now takes 3 seconds. The other result? They decreased the tonnage and disposal cost for each center.
How it Works:
When a resident scans their ID, IDScan.net’s mobile ID scanning system checks the ID against the Chattanooga database to determine whether the ID is a) within the City of Chattanooga Limits and; b) how many times the resident has deposited refuse at the center that year.
The City of Chattanooga’s personnel then receives a pop up on the mobile device with the corresponding information. If the resident is not within the limits, they are turned away. It has also helped Chattanooga more strictly enforce their policy to allow up to disposing 12 times per rolling year.
What People Are Saying:
Debie Mikel, Chattanooga’s Technical Information Manager states, “The VeriScan Online automated data capture is an enormous added value.” To read the whole case study, click here.
IDScan.net is in the process of helping other municipalities and is ready to help others that are ready to stop wasting time with waste!
IDScan.net has a new global solution which will change the way the gaming industry operates. The Ultimate Global Solution automates loyalty enrollment and jackpot win entry by populating the information from the ID directly into the CMS. While IDScan.net has deployed this technology in casinos for over a decade, this solution is the first to allow casino operators to populate information from ANY country ID.
This is invaluable for the industry for a number of reasons. Casino personnel no longer have to waste time manually entering ID information and management can be assured that the information is 100% accurate. This is particularly important when issuing jackpot wins. In addition, the solution utilizes IDScan.net’s proprietary parsing engine along with UV and Infrared Technology powered by 3M hardware to provide an unparalleled level of ID authentication.
For further authentication, casino operators can pair this with IDScan.net’s biometric technology and watch list checks. Gaming personnel can run the ID against internal, national as well as international databases some of which include Self-Exclusion, OFAC and more. IDScan.net has worked with its customers and industry partners to develop a solution that would help slot floor staff increase security while enhancing their operations.
The Ultimate Global Solution is IGT certified and will work with any Casino Management System. Casino operators can purchase it out-of-the-box or utilize it with IDScan.net’s ID scanning SDK for larger scale deployments.
IDScan.net is headquartered in New Orleans and for over 14 years has provided the gaming industry with quality ID scanning solutions that streamline visitor management, automate data capture and authenticate worldwide government-issued IDs. March was fraud awareness month, but fraud occurs every month of the year. For this reason, I wanted to arm businesses with important statistics about fraud and what actions they can take to stop it. Several industries can see a considerable decrease in fraud by utilizing a “multi-layered” approach. This includes solutions which tier identity verification and identity authentication. Below are some of the ways ID scanning does this:
- ID Verification: Incorporate ID scanning solutions that ensure that the ID is a valid, government issued ID with correct formatting of barcode features, ID number, etc.
- ID Validation: Utilize higher level vetting to validate the identity of the individual. This includes running the ID against government databases such as OFAC and many others.
- ID Authentication: Authenticate the ID with a check ID for proper security features, holograms, etc. to ensure that the ID is not a fake
Did you know?
88.3% of identity fraud is committed using a fake ID. This number is alarmingly high especially when you consider that over the past six years, fraudsters have stolen $112 billion. This comes down to $35,600 stolen per minute. (AmericanBanker.com)
$2.40 is the amount every dollar of fraud cost merchants in 2016, this is up from $2.23 in 2015. (LexisNexis)
Fraud’s percentage of revenues rose from 1.32 percent to 1.47% in 2016. This revenue is extremely high for retailers and continues to be a growing issue for the retail industry. (LexisNexis)
These statistics are unnerving to say the least. But, as you read, IDScan.net can help. We provide complete solutions with both hardware and software that help users ensure that an ID is properly verified, validated and authenticated.
This past Friday, the IDScan.net team had the pleasure of attending NADA100 in our hometown of New Orleans. NADA-National Automobile Dealer’s Association celebrated its 100th anniversary with exhibitors from all over the U.S. Major players in the automotive industry were present including GM Finance, Manheim, Dealertrack and many more. A large number of the services that the exhibitors provide include DMS/CRM platforms as well as financial institutions that play in the automotive space. Witnessing this, reinforced the fact that ID scanning is an integral component to helping these companies function most efficiently, and in turn providing outstanding customer service. Below is a list of 6 ways as to how ID scanning is relevant to the automotive industry.
- DMS & CRM Providers
- Automate data capture (including mobile) directly into CRM when adding a new customer
- Automate ID data capture for test drives and onboarding new customers directly into their CRM platform
- Validate employee drivers when transporting cars from lot to lot
- Financial Institutions
- Automate data capture process for new sales and customer financing
- Enable higher level vetting such as running an ID against OFAC and performing other identity validation checks
Whether you are a dealer or provide a service to them, ID scanning will help to streamline your operations so you can focus on what’s truly important, the customer.
Mississippi Updates IDs & Enhances Issuing Process.
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety announced that it is now issuing newly designed driver’s licenses and state ID cards. This is the largest change in the department’s history. The transition started 5 years ago and is supposed to come to full completion at the end of this year.
The Mississippi DPS decided to do this as a security measure. Like many other states that have recently implemented this sort of change, the goal is to protect its citizens against identity theft and prevent counterfeiting.

DPS’s changes go beyond the design of the ID. The department has developed kiosks to expedite ID issuing services to Mississippi residents. According to Public Safety Commissioner Alberta Santa Cruz, “We are pleased to announce the roll-out of our new upgraded kiosks and online services geared at making transactions with the Department of Public Safety more efficient.”

90 Day Alaska Real ID Extension Granted
Earlier this week, Alaskan military base, Fort Wainwright, issued a press release with a list of states and territories whose residents will not be able to enter the base with their state ID cards as of October 10th of this year.
The reason for this was because these states have ID cards that are not compliant with the Real ID Act. As of this morning, these non compliant states have been granted a 90 day extension so that the IDs will be accepted at federal facilities until January 9th, of 2017.
Below are the states that received an extension:
Alaska Arkansas California Idaho Illinois
Kentucky Louisiana Maine Massachusetts Michigan
Montana New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York
North Carolina North Dakota Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania
Rhode Island South Carolina Texas Virginia

In case you missed our previous blog posts, the Real ID Act was created in 2005 as a response to 9/11. The idea was to tighten up security on state ID cards in an effort to prevent terrorists from obtaining them. One of the requirements is that a person show proof of citizenship or residency in order to obtain a license.
Air Force Bases Restrict Access to those with Minnesota, Missouri, Washington & American Samoa IDs
Beginning August 15th, no Defense Department installation will accept IDs from Minnesota, Missouri, Washington or American Samoa. Some of these installations include U.S. Air Force bases, Holloman and Patrick.
Other sectors of the U.S. Defense Department, including the Navy, Marine Corps and Army stopped accepting identification that was not compliant with the Real ID Act in the early part of this year. The U.S. Air Force bases decided to wait to enforce the Real ID requirements until they received further direction according to Military.com.
The U.S. Air Force bases changed the identification requirements so they would be in compliance with enforcing the Real ID Act. Maj. Megan Hall , 45th Security Forces Squadron commander states, “Implementation of the Real ID Act will bring us into compliance with the congressionally-mandated identification standards.”
The Holloman Air Force Base located in Otero County, New Mexico and the Patrick Air Force base, located in Brevard County, Florida have each stated that alternative forms of proper identification will be accepted and that the rules will not affect current military members, dependents or retirees.
Some of the forms of identification that will be accepted at U.S. Air Force bases include:
- U.S. or foreign government passport
- Employment authorization documents which include a photo
- ID cards issued by federal, state or local government agencies that include a “photo and biographical information.”
- Enhanced driver’s licenses from Minnesota or Washington
The Driver License Division in Utah’s Department of Public Safety started issuing new driver’s licenses and state ID cards in June of this year. The replacement process will take around 5 years.
Utah DPS decided to do this as a security measure. Like many other states that have done this recently, the goal is to protect its citizens against identity theft and prevent counterfeiting. The new security features on the ID will make it more difficult for the IDs to be replicated. The IDs are also compliant with the Real ID Act. An extra security precaution includes mailing the new IDs from a secure MVA facility, so counterfeiters will have a reduced chance to access the equipment that produces the IDs as well as personal information.
Some of the new features include:
- Laser perforation
- Laser engraving
- Beehive graphic to be embedded into the new cards

The Utah DPS contracted MorphoTrust USA to make the enhancements with a 5 year agreement. Morphotrust USA President and CEO, Bob Eckel stated, “MorphoTrust is delighted to continue to grow our nearly 50-year partnership with the Utah Driver License Division.” “Our mission is to secure, protect and simplify the lives of the American people and we are priveleged to be able to work with the great state of Utah to provide them with the enhanced personalized security features and new ‘look and feel’ for their driver’s license they required.
