Top 11 Mobile ID Scanning Apps Ranked: Why VeriScan Earned the #1 Spot

With dozens of mobile ID scanning applications available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, bars, restaurants, convenience stores, and other age-restricted businesses have more options than ever for digital age verification and may struggle to find the best ID scanning app. Many of these apps advertise fake ID detection, but how well do they actually perform?

To find out, we evaluated 11 of the most popular mobile ID scanning apps using a test set of 103 known fake IDs, 13 expired IDs, and three international IDs. Each application was assessed on its ability to detect counterfeit IDs, identify expired credentials, scan consistently, provide useful features, and deliver value for its cost.

The results were clear: VeriScan was the only application that consistently and reliably detected counterfeit IDs while maintaining a fast, intuitive user experience.

1. VeriScan

VeriScan earned the top ranking by a significant margin, detecting most of the counterfeit IDs presented during testing while delivering one of the fastest scanning experiences of any application evaluated.

Unlike many consumer scanning apps, VeriScan performs advanced 2D barcode security validation to identify fake IDs. The application also offers customizable alerts, watchlists, reporting, and flexible workflow settings, making it suitable for high-volume environments.

Despite providing significantly more robust verification capabilities, VeriScan was also priced lower than five of the competing applications evaluated making it the best ID scanning app available in the mobile app stores.

2. ID Scanner (App Sub 1, LLC)

IDScanner ranks second primarily because it offers a free version, an intuitive interface, and occasionally provides a “Possibly Fake” warning. While its counterfeit detection remains limited, it did correctly identify six of the thirteen expired IDs tested.

One usability issue observed during testing was the lack of feedback when a barcode could not be read, leaving users waiting unnecessarily before determining whether another scan was required.

Although this application showed measurable improvement over last year’s testing, it should not be relied upon as a primary method of counterfeit ID detection.

3. Scannr

Scannr demonstrated modest improvement over previous testing and correctly identified most expired IDs. The application is competitively priced at $14.99 for three months.

However, it failed to read 46.2% of the IDs presented, requiring users to determine their own workflow for unreadable barcodes. While the application accurately calculated age, the default minimum age is set to 18, requiring businesses selling alcohol or tobacco products to manually update the setting.

The most significant issue was barcode readability. Even under good lighting conditions, the camera frequently struggled to focus, resulting in slower transactions and inconsistent performance.

4. ID Scanner Professional

IDScanner Professional did not identify any counterfeit IDs during testing. However, it ranks above several competitors because it frequently fails to read counterfeit barcodes rather than incorrectly validating them. Businesses could choose to manually inspect IDs that cannot be scanned, although this should not be considered a substitute for actual authentication.

The application correctly identified expired IDs whenever the barcode was successfully read.

During testing, the software occasionally approved IDs despite failing to accurately extract basic information such as the cardholder’s name, raising concerns about verification reliability. While the application functions adequately for reading age and identification data, it should not be considered a counterfeit ID detection solution.

5. Vemos

Vemos correctly flagged one ID as “Possibly Fake” and detected approximately 77% of the expired IDs tested. It also successfully scanned all international IDs included in the evaluation.

However, its counterfeit detection performance did not justify its $79 per month subscription cost. The application also limits new users to only ten free scans, making it difficult to fully evaluate before subscribing.

Customization options such as alerts, notes, and watchlists were also limited compared to higher-ranked applications.

6. ID Scanner: Smart ID Check

ID Scanner: Smart ID Check provides a clean interface, fast scanning, customizable settings, and configurable alerts. However, its counterfeit detection capabilities were limited, identifying only one fake ID while failing to detect any expired IDs during testing.

The application also failed to read 46.2% of the IDs presented and does not offer a free trial. Pricing begins at $9.99 per week.

7. ID Scanner Pro

IDScanner Pro successfully identified all expired IDs but did not detect any counterfeit IDs.

Rather than authenticating security features, the application primarily relies on AI to extract information from the front of the ID. One international ID was flagged for manual review, likely due to formatting differences rather than fraud detection.

Testing also revealed slower scan times of approximately five to eight seconds, sensitivity to card positioning, and occasional issues where previously scanned IDs remained displayed.

The application includes configurable alerts and watchlists and is priced at $39.99 per month.

8. Scandit

Scandit did not detect any counterfeit IDs during testing and identified fewer than half of the expired IDs presented.

The application occasionally displayed a “Not REAL ID Compliant” warning; however, these alerts reflected missing REAL ID indicators rather than evidence of counterfeiting and were therefore not counted as successful fake ID detections.

Additional usability concerns included slow scan times of approximately eight to twelve seconds, difficulty recovering after failed scans, inconsistent retention of double-sided scanning settings, and the absence of watchlists or alert functionality.

Pricing begins at $9.99 per month.

9. ID Scanner (Alfa Dewi)

Although this application detected more counterfeit IDs than several higher-ranked competitors, overall usability significantly impacted its ranking.

During testing, the application successfully flagged the first counterfeit ID but was unable to scan another barcode after that. The app advertises cross-match verification, but without the barcode scanner working, it relies primarily on AI image analysis, resulting in frequent false warnings and inconsistent performance. The app repeatedly flagged IDs for missing information that was included on the ID, flagged an ID as underage when the DOB on the ID was over 21 and also gave “Review” warnings for an ID that failed multiple checks. Scan times averaged between ten and fifteen seconds, and multiple image captures were often required.

Given its monthly cost of more than $50, the overall value was limited.

10. BCS ID Scanner

BCS ID Scanner ranked last due to both usability and performance concerns.

The application features an outdated interface, limited user feedback during scanning, and no indication when a barcode cannot be read. During testing, these issues slowed workflow and made scan results difficult to interpret.

Although marketed as an ID verification solution, many verification capabilities require upgrading beyond the base version.

11. ID Verify

ID Verify did not detect any counterfeit IDs during testing but correctly identified 46.2% of expired IDs.

The application offers a free version with visitor management functionality, with paid plans beginning at $9.99 per month. While suitable for basic visitor logging and age calculation, it does not provide meaningful counterfeit ID detection.

Summary of Findings

While every business has unique operational needs that may influence which mobile ID scanning app best fits its workflow, we believe overall performance should be measured by verification reliability, ease of use, features, and value. Based on our testing, VeriScan consistently outperformed the other applications evaluated, making it our top recommendation and, in our view, the most reliable ID scanning app currently available on the mobile app stores.

Price is understandably an important consideration for businesses, but the cost of admitting an underage customer, including regulatory penalties, liability exposure, and reputational damage, can far exceed the monthly subscription cost of an effective verification solution.

One of the most important findings from this evaluation is that reading an ID is not the same as authenticating it. Many applications successfully calculate age or display information encoded in the barcode but perform little or no validation to determine whether the credential itself is genuine. As a result, businesses may gain a false sense of security while counterfeit IDs continue to pass inspection.

VeriScan was the only application in this evaluation to consistently combine advanced counterfeit detection with fast scanning, customizable workflows, and enterprise-grade reliability. For businesses that simply need to display a customer’s age, lower-cost applications may be sufficient. However, organizations that need dependable counterfeit detection and stronger protection against underage sales will benefit from a purpose-built verification solution like VeriScan.
