Ohio, as of May 2023, does not currently have a mobile driver’s license available to its residents. Apple is making its mark in the mobile identification realm in which users can add their digital ID to their Apple Wallet, making it easily accessible. States already participating in the mobile driver’s license program with Apple include Arizona, Maryland, and Colorado. Ohio is committed to implementing this feature, but it is unclear when the feature will be supported in the state.
Arizonans can currently use their mobile ID in the Apple Wallet to go through airport security at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It is unclear currently whether or not this mobile ID feature would be allowed in the Ohio airport. More information will hopefully soon be released on when this mobile driver’s license feature will be available for the residents of Ohio.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is slowly in the process of developing a mobile driver’s license. A mobile driver’s license is just that – a digitized version of your physical driver’s license available on your smartphone. In PA, this mDL would be optional: according to PA local news, “the current bill reads that you would still need to have a physical copy of your license, but an app would give you the option to carry just the digital version.” Physical IDs will still be issued and will work the same.
Representative Dan Miller has been influenced by founding mobile ID state Louisiana when it released its LA Wallet app for residents. Since then, more states have released mDL apps, allowing for more influence for PA’s app. States such as Louisiana, Maryland, and Arizona have already launched electronic IDs. States such as Hawaii, Kentucky, and Virginia are currently piloting platforms for mobile driver’s licenses.
Representative Miller has been working toward passing a bill with Congress for years and does not plan to stop anytime soon: he hopes that mobile IDs can become law within the first six months of this year and that the mDL can come into fruition and be available for residents within the year after the law is passed. He sent a memo to fellow representatives, saying that he will re-introduce legislation regarding the option to download a mobile version of their driver’s licenses.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is interested in the mobile IDs and is working toward developing a software that can be used by all residents. It is unclear whether the mobile ID would be kept in one’s Apple Wallet or if it would be a separately downloaded app. Louisiana has its own app dedicated to mDLs, whereas Connecticut mDLs are offered through the Apple Wallet. So, both ways are possible; it is just up to PennDOT as to which suits them better.
Alabama updated their laws to allow for the possibility of digital IDs back in November 2015. The mobile driver’s license was announced in 2018. At the time, representatives from Alabama Law Enforcement said that the digital ID could be sent to a smartphone and stored in the user’s Apple Wallet. However, as of June 2023 Alabama is not one of the states with native integration to Apple Wallet. The only states with active integrations are Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland.
Relevant Legislation
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) may issue a digital copy of a driver’s license or non-driver identification card pursuant to Section 32-6-1, Code of Ala. 1975, that may be displayed through an ALEA approved mobile or other software application on a wireless communications or mobile electronic device.
The digital driver’s license or non-driver identification card may contain all information present on a physical license or identification card. In addition, a digital license or identification card may include a bar code or other mechanism, as created or approved by ALEA that may be scanned or otherwise utilized to reveal the information.
A licensee may produce an ALEA approved digital copy of his or her license in lieu of possessing a physical license when operating a motor vehicle or vessel. This can be done by downloading the Alabama eID app from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Users complete a short registration, verify their identities by scanning their physical ID, and then taking a selfie with their smartphone for matching purposes.
How Does the mDL Work?
Upon demand of a judge of any court in this state, a peace officer, or a state trooper, or any other state or local government entity a licensee may produce an ALEA approved digital license or non-driver identification card, and it will be recognized as though it was a physical license or identification card. The Secretary or his/her designee shall deem how a digital copy of a driver’s license or identification card is accepted.
If the licensee displays the digital driver’s license or identification card through the ALEA approved mobile application, the person is not implicitly consenting to allow access or to search other contents of the wireless communication or electronic device other than provided for by law.

The state announced that it planned to begin offering Kentucky mobile ID, or mobile driver’s license (mDL), to state residents through the Apple Wallet. To add your driver’s license to Apple Wallet, you must click the “+” symbol. Then, you should scan your physical ID and take a selfie for verification purposes. You will also need to complete facial and head movements to complete the setup. Apple stated that with the mDL addition to your Apple Wallet, they will not know where or when the ID is being presented; you will simply need to show your ID on your phone, not hand it over. In addition to the Apple Wallet, Kentucky has talked about developing a state-based app, Kentucky Mobile ID (MID), that will likely work in conjunction with the new Real ID format.
Kentucky is among the first states to bring mobile ID to the Apple Wallet. Other states taking part in this initiative include Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at airports will “enable select airport security checkpoints and lanes in participating airports as the first locations customers can use their driver’s license or state ID in Wallet.” Because the mDL is so secure, airports are working toward implementing mobile IDs (if you have one) as part of their security check.
Digital ID Implementation
“The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is excited to be leading the pack through this innovative collaboration with Apple to further deliver on our pledge to take driver licensing to the next level,” said Matt Cole, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Vehicle Regulation. “The potential for mobile driver’s licenses is limitless, and we look forward to taking steps to continue to offer modern conveniences to Kentuckians while maintaining our unwavering commitment to security and privacy.”
There is not currently a timeline for when the expected research and implementation is set to begin, but we will continue to watch for updates on the new Kentucky mobile ID format, so stay tuned for more information.

Earlier this year, Apple announced that Arizona would be the first state ever to offer a digital version of the state issued driver’s license in the Apple Wallet for iPhone or Apple Watch. Since this announcement, several other states have eagerly awaited their turn to hop on the digital ID train, Colorado being one of them. But doesn’t Colorado have their own mobile ID app? Yes, and it will continue to work in tandem with the Apple Wallet version.
Digital ID app for Colorado
The two apps are similar, but have different functions. The myColorado App is a statewide accepted replacement for your physical ID card. It stores information such as driver’s license number, vaccine status, fishing license, and more. The mobile ID that can be used in the Apple wallet is a version of the ID that is meant to be used during travel at select TSA checkpoints and is not sufficient as a replacement for the physical ID.
This new ID format is particularly beneficial for those traveling, because you will no longer have to present your physical Colorado ID while going through TSA, so long as you refer to TSA signage to ensure you’re in a location that accepts this new identification method.
To get your Colorado Mobile ID set up, you must first make sure you meet the technical requirements of an iPhone 8 or newer, and an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer. You must also have the latest iOS versions downloaded for both your phone and watch, two-factor authentication must be on, and you must be signed in with your Apple ID with your location set. Your physical ID card should also be clear and easily readable. If you meet the aforementioned requirements, Coloradoans can add the new Mobile ID by tapping the plus (+) button at the top right corner of the wallet app. From there, scan your Colorado ID, take a series of photos so that your identity can be verified, then submit your Mobile ID for verification. Once the state approves the ID, it will be added to your Apple Wallet.
Where new Mobile ID is accepted
For now, the new digital ID will only be accepted at select TSA checkpoints, including the Denver International Airport, so people are still encouraged to carry their physical ID, especially when driving. That being said, this is also where the myColorado app comes in handy. So if you still don’t have your physical ID, the myColorado app would suffice during routine traffic stops and age verification checkpoints in Colorado.

Which states currently offer a mobile driver’s license (mDL)
Several states have created proprietary applications by local developers or global technology companies such as Thales. However, many are working with Apple to integrate IDs into Apple Wallet. You can view our full library of mobile driver’s license data by state on our mDL Library site.
Apple Wallet Mobile Driver’s Licenses (mDLs)
Currently, four states offer Apple Wallet integration for mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) – Arizona, Maryland, Georgia, and Colorado.
Iowa, Kentucky, Utah, and New York have announced plans to integrate their licenses via Apple Wallet.
To use the Apple Wallet app, you need an iPhone 8 or newer, and an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer. You must also have the latest iOS versions downloaded for both your phone and your watch, two-factor authentication must be on, and you must be signed in with your Apple ID with your location set.
During the setup process, you will be prompted to follow these steps:
Scan your physical driver’s license or state ID card.
Complete a series of facial and head movements. Apple’s mDL process will instruct the user to turn their head and open their mouth as part of their liveness check.
The information will be submitted to the state DMV for confirmation. This process can take several days.
If the state DMV cannot verify you digitally, they will send a physical post card to your mailing address with a code to verify your identity. This process can take 7-10 days.
The user will enter the custom code into an in-browser verification site to complete the process.
After you’ve downloaded the app and set up your account, the issuing state will verify the ID. Once the ID has been verified, it will be added to your Apple Wallet.
Apple Wallet mDLs use near field communication (NFC) protocols to send specific information for identity verification. A biometric tracker (either fingerprint or face-match) is required to open the ID.
State-Sponsored Or Custom-Built Applications
Several states offer their own apps to store your digital driver’s licenses.
Enter your license information and select “Add License” again.
The state auto-populates a photo of the front and back of your driver’s license.
Vaccine cards, Concealed Handgun Permits, and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Licenses can also be stored in the LA Wallet app.
Colorado: myColorado is the state of Colorado’s official mobile app. It is currently not compatible with other electronic wallets, including but not limited to Apple, Google, and Samsung.
Download the myColorado app from the iPhone app store or Google Play Store.
Create an account and give myColorado access to your camera.
Scan the back of your Colorado driver’s license or state ID.
Create a username and password.
Enable Touch/Face ID to log in quickly.
Tap Login, and enter your username and password. Allow notifications to stay up-to-date.
To create your Colorado Digital ID, tap CO Digital ID.
Colorado recently added mDLs via Apple Wallet, so the future of their MyColorado app is unclear.
Florida has partnered with identity verification firm Thales to create the Florida SmartID application; however, there have been questions around adoption of the ID as state agencies such as the police say that they do not accept the ID inside the Florida Smart Wallet app.
Key Trends in Digital Driver’s Licenses
While it’s still too early to leave your physical ID at home, the trend toward mDLs is ramping up. Just three years after the launch of the LA Wallet, more than 30% of Louisiana adults have downloaded and installed the application. TSA checkpoints at more than 20 airports accept mDLs from the Apple Wallet for airport access.
Preparing for the inevitability of mDLs is critical and includes the ability to scan any state ID, digital or physical. Contact one of our experts to ensure your business is ready for the wave of mobile IDs.
