In February 2023, during a budget hearing, it was announced that New York would soon be added to the growing list of states implementing a mobile driver’s license (mDL). The commissioner of the Dept. of Motor Vehicles in New York, March Schroeder, revealed that his agency is currently developing a mobile application that would allow New Yorkers to leave their ID at home, and have it digitally on their phones.

A spokesperson for the agency said that the process is still in the development phase, so it is “too early in the process to talk about where or how it might be used.’ However, the Department of Motor Vehicles still plans to have the application live later in 2023.
