Georgia implements new mobile driver’s license

Georgia Apple Wallet mDL

Georgia has officially released their new mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) . The new version of the Georgia state driver’s license is available through the Apple Wallet on both iPhones and Apple Watches. The state has now joined Arizona and Colorado in officially being integrated into the Apple Wallet, with more states on the way.

How to get set up

To get your Georgia Mobile ID set up, you must first make sure you meet the technical requirements of an iPhone 8 or newer, and an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer. You must also have the latest iOS versions downloaded for both your phone and watch, two-factor authentication must be on, and you must be signed in with your Apple ID with your location set. Your physical ID card should also be clear and easily readable. If you meet the aforementioned requirements, Georgians can add the new Mobile ID by tapping the plus (+) button at the top right corner of the wallet app. From there, scan your Georgia ID, take a series of photos so that your identity can be verified, then submit your Mobile ID for verification. Once the state approves the ID, it will be added to your Apple Wallet.

Where can you use the new ID?

For now, Georgia residents will still need to carry their physical ID. The new Georgia mobile driver’s license will only be accepted at select TSA checkpoints, including Hartsfield-Jackson. However, in Atlanta, the new Georgia mobile driver’s license format is only applicable for TSA Precheck members. For any law enforcement stops or when needing to purchase age restricted products, Georgia residents will still need to show a copy of their physical ID.

Other states such as Louisiana and Florida offer state-operated apps for mobile IDs, differing from the Apple Wallet. The benefits of mDLs include “providing secure, convenient identity verification capable of reducing the use of expired, invalid and counterfeit IDs,” according to mDL Connection.
