Firearm Retailers: 5 Things You Must Know

5  Things Firearm Retailers Must Know about ID Scanning to Streamline Operations and Increase Safety

Automate Data Entry on Form 4473. Applications like IDScan.net’s WizzForms, will populate Form 4473 in less than 1 second with the information stored on the buyer’s ID. Rather than sit there and manually type out the information, the WizzForms software will do it for you. This will not only save retailers time but will ensure that they have 100% accurate data capture.

Use with Your Firearms Platform. You can populate your firearms platform with a customer’s information whether you are issuing them a permit or disposing of a firearm.

Eliminate Paperwork. ID scanning will allow you to eliminate paperwork so you can increase your operational efficiency and get organized. Software like IDScan.net’s VeriScan Plus will easily streamline your operations. VeriScan Plus collects the information from a customer’s ID in less than 1 second and stores all data collected which can then be easily accessed at any time, be it for demographic analysis or sharing information with law enforcement. Retailers have the option of grouping customers such as “Gold Customer” or “Banned.” It also has the capability to enable fingerprint technology so once the fingerprint is captured, a customer can scan their fingerprint without having to take out their ID.

Enable Higher Level Identity Authentication. ID scanning enables retailers to reduce fraud and minimize liability. Certain ID scanning hardware will detect fake holograms with UV technology. ID scanning applications such as WizzForms and VeriScan Plus will provide an error message if the formatting of the ID does not match that of government issued IDs. For further authentication, some retailers utilize watch lists by running IDs against said lists.

Existing Applications. If you have your own application, IDScan.net’s ID scanning SDK will work with it. The ID scanning SDK will allow you to capture customer ID information with your  application. We have SDK’s available for single licenses as well as for large scale deployments.

Let’s Go Black: ID Verification API Innovation at HBCU Hackathon

TechConneXt 2016 – IDScan.net inks an API hackathon partnership with Black Enterprise.

Driving Innovation is a resounding theme of companies large and small in various verticals around the globe. Fall 2016, New Orleans based software company — IDScan.net — decided to inspire millennial college students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to innovate by partnering with Black Enterprise as the exclusive Persona Verification Dev Box Partner of the BE Smart Hackathon sponsored by Toyota.

October 9th through 11th, 40 students from 10 HBCUs arrived at the Black Enterprise TechConneXt Summit in Burlingame, CA (Silicon Valley) eager to receive their IDScan.net Web Service API keys to engulf their days and nights with developing and deploying a Minimum Value Product (MVP) based on this year’s theme, In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI).

Andrey Stanovnov, CTO of IDScan.net, stated, “IDScan.net is thrilled to provide their technology in the Driving Innovation Hackathon as it fosters growth and innovation in participants that will soon be our future leaders.”

Participating schools included Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, Johnson C. Smith University, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Southern University and A&M College, and Tuskegee University.

Each school was tasked to innovate an iOS app within the Ionic Cloud framework and utilized required APIs provided, which included IDScan.net’s Web Service API. To build the verification component of the app, hackers used IDScan.net’s ID scanning Web Services API. One of the goals of the development was to provide a verification in the app that went beyond just entering a username and password. Participants utilized the ID scanning API to verify the identity of the driver by scanning their ID.

Nathaniel J., Associate Tech Editor-Silicon Valley of Black Enterprise and Founder & Chief Digital Architect of VUEmega Technologies, states, “ID verification should not be an afterthought when creating various app innovations for end-users today. One of IDScan.net’s goals is to build a trusted community of users that are verified. Because of this, IDScan.net is the best solution not only for this year’s hackathon but also for companies that want to ensure a trusted community of users.”

This year’s winner was Aggie++ from North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T). NC A&T’s winning iOS IVI is Let’s Go Black. Let’s Go Black is an iOS application that helps discover a customized road trip adventure exploring Black history and culture, while supporting Black owned small businesses along the way. The app allows users to input parameters of the trip (i.e. theme, distance and starting location), then randomly generates a road trip with specially curated stops that are African American inspired attractions and landmarks. Additionally, the app alerts users when they are within the vicinity of Black owned small businesses, who are members of the Let’s Go Black platform.

The 2016 BE Smart Hackathon, sponsored by Toyota was judged by industry leading experts from companies such as Intel and AT&T.

5 Things You Must Know to Ensure Nightclub & Bar Safety

Keeping Your Club Safe:

Running a bar takes more than having good selection of liquor, as the owner you have a responsibility to keep patrons safe. Nobody wants to frequent an establishment where fights break out often. Such behavior puts both guests and employees at risk. Robert Smith, CEO of Nightclub Security Consultants and former police officer, hosted a seminar, Keeping Your Club Safe during a nightclub convention in New Orleans this past August. The contents of Robert’s presentation are extremely valuable and a must know for all of those working in the nightclub and bar industry.

What You Need to Know:

  1. Statistics: According to the Bureau of Labor & Statistics, gun violence has increased 23% over the last 4 years. Once a shooter is challenged, they will typically stop shooting. According to the FBI, 50% of shooters are stopped by an unarmed citizen. Knowing these statistics is crucial in order for nightclub operators to make these numbers go down.
  2. Why has there been an increase in violence? There is a large, young demographic that frequents nightclubs and bars. This demographic is different from its preceding generations as they are desensitized to violence. One of the reasons for this desensitization is due to video games, where shooting a gun is normal. Another reason is due to their lack of interpersonal skills because of the increase in using text and online messaging. Their skills in communicating and dealing with conflict are lacking compared to older generations.
  3.  Stopping a Bar Fight Before it Starts: Shooters can be categorized into 4 groups. There is the angry patron inside of the club, the angry patron that staff ejected from the club, patrons tied into domestic violence and the planned shooter. Planned shooters are what the public and nightclub owners tend to worry about the most. However, the majority of violence in clubs is a result from the angry customer inside the club and the ejected one.
  4. People Oriented Solution: Robert’s motto is Run, Hide, Fight. It is important to keep your patrons and staff safe and avoid violence whenever possible. However, at some point, it may be necessary for a person to stop the shooter from causing more harm by fighting back. The best way to stop the shooter, however, is preventing them from shooting in the first place.  Below are some of Robert’s recommendations:
    • Train staff to be aware of the people and activity in your establishment
    • Re-evaluate your security procedures
    • Change your mindset-think in terms of the aggressor and what they might do
    • Kick someone out for an argument, don’t let them back in. Have the cops escort them off of the premises
    • Befriend law enforcement prior to ever needing them
    • Have staff wear day glow vests when clearing out a club so potential aggressors will think they are law enforcement
    • Use improvised weapons when necessary
  5. ID Scanning Solution: ID scanning plays an important role when it comes to increasing nightclub and bar safety. ID scanning goes beyond age verification. In less than 1 second, the patron’s information, including name and address is collected, and a time stamp is created. With a solution like VeriScan or VeriScan Online, an additional layer of validation is provided. It is also possible to tie the ID into government databases for nightclub industry operators that want a higher level of identity vetting. ID scanning solutions also give staff the ability to group patrons. If a patron is banned, the next time their ID is scanned, it will pop up on the scanning screen, that they are “banned.” Existing banned lists can be imported and shared among clubs. ID scanning also allows nightclub and bar staff to easily search and export visitor logs to aid in law enforcement investigations.

IDScan.net can help minimize violence in your establishment and help you comply with law enforcement when necessary. Learn more about IDScan.net’s nightclub and bar solutions, here or call one of our specialists, at 888-430-8936!

4 Reasons a Strong Visitor Management System is Critical for Correctional Facilities

Progressive prisons across the globe are using ID scanning to streamline their visitor management. In the United States, there are over 2,220,300 incarcerated adults, so having the ability to easily track who is coming in and out of the facility to visit these prisoners is absolutely essential to securing the grounds, reducing risks and increasing operational efficiencies.

Here are four reasons a robust visitor management system centered on quality ID scanning is critical for prisons:

  1. For many prisons, the visit process occurs before the visitor even sets foot on prison grounds. With ID scanning applications like VeriScan Online, facility personnel can create and send a visit request to the security director with an electronic request form. This form includes such information as the start of the visit, host’s name, visitor’s name and other pertinent informaiton. Once the request is submitted, the security director will ultimately decide whether or not that individual is approved for the visitor queue. The scheduled visits can then be viewed by the appropriate security personnel. On the day of the visit, prison security personnel scan the visitor’s ID. In less than 1 second, the necessary information is collected and a visitor badge highlighting the person’s name and picture, alongside how long the visitor is allowed on the premises can be produced.
  2. Some facilities use biometrics as part of their visitor management processes. Once a person scans their ID and gives their fingerprint, the next time their fingerprint is scanned, their ID data and other relevant information, such as their image will pop up on the screen. This is a great feature for prisons that are trying to ensure a high level of security as well as expedite the check-in process even further.
  3. A higher level of identity validation can be necessary. If an andividual or their ID were to seem suspicious or security personnel wanted to gain more information on the visitor, they could run background checks on the individual by scanning their ID for further background information. The results from these checks appear in a matter of a few seconds. In addition, some facilities have existing lists of “banned” visitors. These lists can be imported into certain ID scanning software (such as IDScan.net’s VeriScan Online) so if their ID is scanned, it will pop up that they are banned. This added layer of security helps keeps prison staff and prisoners safe.
  4. Visitor management systems offer benefits beyond security. Many prison facilities like to have first-time visitors sign an electronic waiver or an agreement to adhere to the facility’s rules. Once the waiver is signed, it will automatically be saved, stored and linked to that individuals ID scan. If a visitor was to break prison rules or claimed that they were unaware of said rules, IDScan.net’s software allows prison personnel to easily access visitor records. In this case, it would show a signed copy of the rules that the visitor signed. This waiver component will help visitors comply with prison regulations.

IDScan.net can help you reduce prison visitor’s wait time and optimize the check-in process. Learn more about IDScan.net’s visitor management solutions, here or call our VeriScan Online account specialist, Alycia at 888-430-8936 x 103!

Mississippi Updates IDs

Mississippi Updates IDs & Enhances Issuing Process.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety announced that it is now issuing newly designed driver’s licenses and state ID cards.  This is the largest change in the department’s history. The transition started 5 years ago and is supposed to come to full completion at the end of this year.

The Mississippi DPS decided to do this as a security measure.  Like many other states that have recently implemented this sort of change, the goal is to protect its citizens against identity theft and prevent counterfeiting.

Alaska Real ID Extension

90 Day Alaska Real ID Extension Granted

Earlier this week, Alaskan military base, Fort Wainwright, issued a press release with a list of states and territories whose residents will not be able to enter the base with their state ID cards as of October 10th of this year.

The reason for this was because these states have ID cards that are not compliant with the Real ID Act. As of this morning, these non compliant states have been granted a 90 day extension so that the IDs will be accepted at federal facilities until January 9th, of 2017.

Below are the states that received an extension:

Alaska Arkansas California Idaho Illinois
Kentucky Louisiana Maine Massachusetts Michigan
Montana New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York
North Carolina North Dakota Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania
Rhode Island South Carolina Texas Virginia

Alaska Real ID Extension

In case you missed our previous blog posts, the Real ID Act was created in 2005 as a response to 9/11. The idea was to tighten up security on state ID cards in an effort to prevent terrorists from obtaining them. One of the requirements is that a person show proof of citizenship or residency in order to obtain a license.

Nightclub and Bar Owners: What Can You Do with Demographics?

If you are a nightclub or bar owner, scanning an ID should go way beyond verifying a patron’s age. If you are not using the valuable demographic data that is collected upon ID scan, then you are hurting your bottom line.

In this post, you will learn how you can take advantage of the valuable demographic statistics.

Demographic Data That Will Help You:

  • Zip codes
  • Age
  • Gender

demographics.png

Zip codes are important. If you run a report using a tool like VeriScan Online, and you see that a certain zip code in your city or town has minimal presence at your bar, you know you might want to increase your advertising in that area.

You will also want to segment your customers by age and gender. Don’t get me wrong, of course, there will be exceptions to some of the stereotypical  beverage and or music preferences, however having an overall idea of age and gender will help your operations and your bottom line.

If on Tuesdays you primarily have 40-45 year old males at your bar, you would probably consider a scotch or whiskey special. Whereas, if on Fridays you have a large number of 22-25 year old females, you might consider doing a skinny margarita special. This is not to say that millenials don’t like whiskey and 45 year old men don’t like skinny margaritas, but you understand the overall goal here.

By observing statistics about your audience, you can make small adjustments in your operations that will bring great returns.

Rhode Island ID Update

The Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles started issuing newly designed driver’s licenses and state ID cards on July 19th.  This change is the first one since 2003.

The Rhode Island DMV decided to do this as a security measure.  Like many other states that have recently implemented this sort of change, the goal is to protect its citizens against identity theft and prevent counterfeiting. The new security features on the ID will make it more difficult for the IDs to be replicated. The IDs will also bring the state towards Real ID Act compliance. Old ID cards are still valid until their expiration and the fee for the new cards will not change.

Some of the new features include:

  • Optically variable pattern
  • Background features Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge
  • Large image of ID holder as well as a smaller, faded image
  • Date of birth printed in 3 locations
  • Ink that glows when exposed to a UV light
  • Tamper resistant

NBC 10 News reports on a state press release which states, “The Division of Motor Vehicles will transition driver’s licenses to the more secure cards this month, along with the installation of cameras at work stations at DMV and AAA offices around the state,” the release noted. “The cameras are part of a streamlined process that will be introduced with the new cards. Instead of having to go to two work stations to complete their transactions, all work can be done at one station.”

Real ID Act Impacts Air Force Base Access

Air Force Bases Restrict Access to those with Minnesota, Missouri, Washington & American Samoa IDs

Beginning August 15th,  no Defense Department installation will accept IDs from Minnesota, Missouri, Washington or American Samoa. Some of these installations include U.S. Air Force bases, Holloman and Patrick.

Other sectors of the U.S. Defense Department, including the Navy, Marine Corps and Army stopped accepting identification that was not compliant with the Real ID Act in the early part of this year. The U.S. Air Force bases decided to wait to enforce the Real ID requirements until they received further direction according to Military.com.

The U.S. Air Force bases changed the identification requirements so they would  be in compliance with enforcing the Real ID Act.  Maj. Megan Hall , 45th Security Forces Squadron commander states, “Implementation of the Real ID Act will bring us into compliance with the congressionally-mandated identification standards.”

The Holloman Air Force Base located in Otero County, New Mexico and the Patrick Air Force base, located in Brevard County, Florida have each stated that alternative forms of proper identification will be accepted and that the rules will not affect current military members, dependents or retirees.

Some of the forms of identification that will be accepted at U.S. Air Force bases include:

  • U.S. or foreign government passport
  • Employment authorization documents which include a photo
  • ID cards issued by federal, state or local government agencies that include a “photo and biographical information.”
  • Enhanced driver’s licenses from Minnesota or Washington
