fraud prevention

Fraudsters are Everywhere, What Can You do?

March is fraud awareness month, and we want to arm our readers with important statistics, and how IDScan.net can help you stop fraud!

88.3% of identity fraud is committed using a fake ID. This number is alarmingly high especially when you consider that over the past six years, fraudsters have stolen $112 billion. This comes down to $35,600 stolen per minute. (AmericanBanker.com)

$2.40 is the amount every dollar of fraud cost merchants in 2016, this is up from $2.23 in 2015. (LexisNexis)

Fraud’s percentage of revenues rose from 1.32 percent to 1.47% in 2016. This revenue is extremely high for retailers and continues to be a growing issue for the retail industry.  (LexisNexis)

These statistics are unnerving to say the least. But, there is a way IDScan.net can help you fight fraud!  Retailers can see a considerable decrease in fraud by utilizing a “multi-layered” approach. This includes solutions which tier identity verification and identity authentication.  IDScan.net provides complete solutions-both hardware and software that help users fight fraud and ensure that an ID is properly verified, validated and authenticated.

Mississippi Updates IDs

Mississippi Updates IDs & Enhances Issuing Process.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety announced that it is now issuing newly designed driver’s licenses and state ID cards.  This is the largest change in the department’s history. The transition started 5 years ago and is supposed to come to full completion at the end of this year.

The Mississippi DPS decided to do this as a security measure.  Like many other states that have recently implemented this sort of change, the goal is to protect its citizens against identity theft and prevent counterfeiting.

According to Public Safety Commissioner Alberta Santa Cruz, “We are pleased to announce the roll-out of our new upgraded kiosks and online services geared at making transactions with the Department of Public Safety more efficient.”

In case you missed our previous blog posts, the Real ID Act was created in 2005 as a response to 9/11. The idea was to tighten up security on state ID cards in an effort to prevent terrorists from obtaining them. One of the requirements is that a person show proof of citizenship or residency in order to obtain a license.

Real ID Act Impacts Air Force Base Access

Air Force Bases Restrict Access to those with Minnesota, Missouri, Washington & American Samoa IDs

Beginning August 15th,  no Defense Department installation will accept IDs from Minnesota, Missouri, Washington or American Samoa. Some of these installations include U.S. Air Force bases, Holloman and Patrick.

Other sectors of the U.S. Defense Department, including the Navy, Marine Corps and Army stopped accepting identification that was not compliant with the Real ID Act in the early part of this year. The U.S. Air Force bases decided to wait to enforce the Real ID requirements until they received further direction according to Military.com.

The U.S. Air Force bases changed the identification requirements so they would  be in compliance with enforcing the Real ID Act.  Maj. Megan Hall , 45th Security Forces Squadron commander states, “Implementation of the Real ID Act will bring us into compliance with the congressionally-mandated identification standards.”

The Holloman Air Force Base located in Otero County, New Mexico and the Patrick Air Force base, located in Brevard County, Florida have each stated that alternative forms of proper identification will be accepted and that the rules will not affect current military members, dependents or retirees.

Some of the forms of identification that will be accepted at U.S. Air Force bases include:

  • U.S. or foreign government passport
  • Employment authorization documents which include a photo
  • ID cards issued by federal, state or local government agencies that include a “photo and biographical information.”
  • Enhanced driver’s licenses from Minnesota or Washington

Utah ID Update

The Driver License Division in Utah’s Department of Public Safety started issuing new driver’s licenses and state ID cards in June of this year.  The replacement process will take around 5 years.

Utah DPS decided to do this as a security measure.  Like many other states that have done this recently, the goal is to protect its citizens against identity theft and prevent counterfeiting. The new security features on the ID will make it more difficult for the IDs to be replicated. The IDs are also compliant with the Real ID Act. An extra security precaution includes mailing the new IDs from a secure MVA facility, so counterfeiters will have a reduced chance to access the equipment that produces the IDs as well as personal information.

Some of the new features include:

  • Laser perforation
  • Laser engraving
  • Beehive graphic to be embedded into the new cards

ALE:

The Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) is responsible for the enforcement of ABC Laws. They are a division of the Department of Public Safety.

As a bar owner in North Carolina, you know the importance of complying with  ALE and its unique requirements. Many of you have establishments which the ABC considers to be a private club. The North Carolina ABC rules can make ensuring compliance a time consuming and laborious process.

Some of ABC’s Requirements for North Carolina:

  • Membership Roster with all Members Names & Addresses in Alphabetical Order
  • Signed Membership Agreement in Alphabetical Order
  • Alphebatized Visitor Log
  • Member Hobbies

Bar Owners’ Challenges:

You are in a challenging position. You have to ensure that you meet the above requirements while also still focusing on training employees, ensuring your customers receive a positive and timely experience and ensuring that your staff can focus on their actual responsibilities rather than tedious labor.

Currently, many bar owners are keeping paper logs and having employees file them manually and in alphabetical order at least once a week to prepare for a possible ALE visit.  While this meets compliance, it is not efficient for operations and wastes precious time that you could dedicate toward enhanced service, marketing efforts, etc.
In an Ideal World, a North Carolina Bar Owner Would Like to be Able to:

  1. Automatically collect & store patron info and classify them as a member or guest

  2. Receive notification of when membership fees are due

  3. Have patron electronically sign membership agreement and store alphabetically for your records

  4. Print out a membership card after automatically collecting patron information

  5. Have an easily accessible and alphebatizable visitor log

The move, according to Denis Petrov, CEO of IDScan.net, allows businesses to process a credit card payment and automatically capture and link it to the data stored on the purchaser’s ID. It allows two separate actions to be processed as one entry.

“This capability is great news for our customers who can now easily collect payments on the spot while ensuring that they have the valuable customer data that they need,” Petrov said.

“The new payment processing feature will allow all types of organizations to increase their number of transactions as well as revenue.” -Denis Petrov, CEO IDScan.net

Easily collect payment regardless of location.

This full scope solution benefits any markets that need to take payments and quickly collect customer data through mobile or desktop solutions. This could be for any type of event entry, donation request, marketing purposes for sales trials, etc. The solution is also essential to fighting chargebacks.

With VeriScan Online, it takes less than 1 second to collect the ID information; this automation provides greater efficiency and accuracy for businesses. The applications not only capture ID and payment information, they also capture signature, provide geo coordinates as well as a receipt. The information collected allows organizations and businesses to better understand their donors or customers. With the applications, businesses can generate reports to identify gender, age, and zip code through an online web portal.

The payment processing is now integrated into all versions of the VeriScan Online application. This also includes the newly released VS Max, a cloud based ID scanning app which has similar functionality to VeriScan Online but gives users further customization options which include customizable fields, whether it is for a questionnaire or to more quickly process visitors.

IDScan.net CTO, Andrey Stanovnov, states “The VS Max application has the additional feature of being completely customizable. The added advantage is it allows customers to tailor exactly what information they would like to capture and keep track of said data in a very streamlined way.

“Both the payment processing integration and the release of the VS Max application are exciting initiatives for IDScan.net. The integrated systems are fast and efficient, and they provide a new and improved experience for both businesses and customers,” Stanovnov said.

LA Governor John Bel Edwards Prepares for Real ID Bill

On Monday, May 30th the Louisiana Senate voted to pass a bill that allows residents to decide whether they want a driver’s license or other state ID card that is compliant with the Real ID Act.

The bill was proposed by Louisiana State Senator Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb (pictured below) and passed with a 28-9 vote. Governor John Bel Edwards plans to sign the bill into law.

Proponents of the bill believe that Louisiana residents should have this option in order to protect their privacy.

As discussed in our last blog post, opponents of the Real ID Act feel that it violates privacy and makes it easier for hackers to obtain personal information due to the fact that the information will go into a database that is shared between states.
